woman on Jeremy kyle

A woman has just said on the Jeremey Kyle show this morning that she could not keep her obese daughters weight down when she was young years ago as there was no low fat food around then. I would have thought as she is talking about 25 years ago that there was the same fish meat and chicken and veg around. You don't need to live on ready made low fat meals to lose weight as I well know. I only keep a couple in my freezer for emergency if I am late in getting home. Apart from people that have a medical problem and find it difficult to lose weight I say you cut out the fat and the crap and you will lose weight as I have done.

It's all very well and good saying "cook a chicken, etc etc etc..." but how many of these women know how to cook it? I imagine cookery classes at school and dabbling in the kitchen with mum didn't feature largely in their lives when growing up.
The majority of us know how to cook a chicken (I hope anyway), but how many posts will we see over in F&D nearer the time asking how long to cook a turkey for etc? It's basic stuff, but not everyone knows it. Chicken nuggets prefrozen and bangers are far safer to not get wrong when you don't know basic cooking.

That's so great Wendilla! Well done. You must feel so chuffed with yourself.
A few years ago I was 14st and at 5'2, that is quite a lot overweight but I didn't try and make any excuses, I was just lazy. Over the years I've been to Slimming World on and off and now I'm down to 10.5 which isn't ideal but I'm doing it in my own time. I actually do excercize these days and pay attention to what I stuff in my mouth. It's actually not that hard when you chose to do it.
I know someone who is really overweight, worryingly so. The thing is she has done slimming world and lost a lot of weight through it but then stopped and always used the excuse that the kids school breaks got in the way of it, etc. Excuse. I was speaking to them recently and she said she had just accepted that she was always going to be that overweight and so just wouldn't bother anymore. Made me so angry, especially as she has kids to think about.

Yes Boo you have a good point there. I am retired and when I was young my mother used to cook proper meals and same with my daughter she learned from me. But you would think if they were really interested in losing weight they would make a point of learning as plenty of cookery books around and tips from tv.

Which begs the question over whether cooking needs to be taken more seriously at school.
My friends daughter is currently at high school, and she's cooked, amongst other useless foods, lasagne and cheesecake. I mean c'mon, seriously? What's up with learning how to cook a chicken, making it stretch to several meals with roasts, curries etc? Basic stews, corned beef hash etc. Whilst these foods aren't glamorous they are cheap, substantial and will no doubt be pretty necessary with this recession we've got going on now.

That's true B00. My neice makes all sorts of crap at school. Why not just some decent cooking?
I have to be honest and say I rarely cook, hate cooking and don't know how to cook (always have someone to cook for me) but I know plenty of people I could ask how to cook a bit of chicken and if you are embarassed that you don't know how to cook a simple meal, it's not like it's hard to go on a site like this and ask or there are plenty of "simple recipes" online to find.
