Charges raised from Battery to ABH and Now GBH. What kind of sentence will my friends ex partner be looking at?

My best friend was assaulted by his ex partner. His ex partner was charged by the police with battery and criminal damage. Since being charged my friends ex partner has appeared in Magistrates Court at which stage the charge was raised to ABH and even though admitting to the police on tape that he did actually assualt my best friend and commit criminal damage pleaded guilty on the criminal damage charge and not guilty on the ABH (Previously battery). The case has been referred to Crown Court and today the police contacted my friend who was told the Crown Court judge wants the medical records from A&E as my friend suffered from two facial fractures (Zygomatic butress fractues) which need a fixation operation under general anaesthetic to the left side of his face. My friend has has turned down this operation due to the fact that there would be permenant scarring on his face and the injuries are now healing (Although he is suffering from alot of pain as it does heal). The Crown Court judge has said he will raise the charge of ABH to GBH upon receipt of the report from the hospital.

- My question is what kind of sentence would my friends ex be looking at getting?
- Is this a prisonable offence and would my friend be looking at getting compensation?

I would like to add my friends ex has a string of other offences for which he was slapped on the wrists for including drugs charges (Pocession), abusive behaviour, drunken disorderily, and an assault charge that was dropped by a third party. He is also known by the police for being a general nuscience and his family are local trouble makers.

It should be noted that the sentences there refer to a first-time offender who is convicted after a trial. Previous convictions (particularly for violence ) can push the sentencing range higher but an early guilty plea can see a sentence cut by one third.

I think the Crown Court Judge wants the charges to be GBH and Criminal Damage and will only raise the ABH charge when he gets the hospital medical report from A&E and luckily the consultant (Who was from the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Team) that attended to my friend in A&E has kept in touch as he was disgusted with the injuries inflicted and asked for my friend to use him as point of contact if the police need any further information. So there shouldn't be any problems getting this report to the police but the police said the judge required this information urgently (We don't understand wh because there are still 6 and a half weeks until m friends ex appears in crown to make his plea of guilty or not guilty).

bednobs - From what I understand the police and witness protection team from the cps are looking to push for personal injuries and criminal damage compensation through crown court as my friend had to fill out a form and was told not to seek compensation through any other means for now.
