The assumption here is that the disgruntled U.S.authorities are pulling all the strings.

I don't know if they are or not, just observing why the U.S. might have been highlighted here.
There appears to me to be a number of strange things about this guy’s arrest and bail refusal.

I would be willing to bet that there are loads of people wanted for rape – but for some unexplained reason, don’t make it on to Interpol’s most wanted list (not that I am trying to downgrade such a serious crime).

I know that the cases are not the same; but there is this guy, wanted in Sweden, on rape charges who has been refused bail – then there is this guy from the UK, who is wanted in South Africa, on a charge of being implicit in his wife’s murder (on honeymoon, no less), who was granted bail (although the SA authorities are reported to be mounting an appeal).
An excellent read to understand the US position as "Marshall of the World" is Henry Kissinger's "Diplomacy." Here is a man who spoke English through his teeth, but his written language is superb.

In the book, he traces a lot of this form of current "We are the Global Sherrif" to Woodrow Wilson, back in the 2nd decade of the 1900's.....and things as to US commercial, political or security questions and protectionism date back to Wilson's policy......this of course being the first decade that the US started to push on the global market.....

BBC News - Wikileaks founder Julian Assange refused bail7 Dec 2010 ... Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who faces rape allegations

One of the charges is that he had unprotected sex with a woman, identified only as Miss A, when she insisted he use a condom.

Another is that he had unprotected sex with another woman, Miss W, while she was asleep.
And your point is.........?
Question Author
while she was asleep

wonder why they did not press charges on him when he was in sweden
true - its a question of the Sheriff of Washiungton DC exerting his supposedly global gunslinging capability.

I can understand why they are ruffled around the boa re the leaks over China to Korea, and Iranian 'politics' to the ME....the publishing of where so- called US points of interests overseas like Goonhilly tracking station down here in Cornwall, or Portreath for the military cables coming ashore, is akin to knowing where the local MaccyDs are.

The lawyer reiterated his claims that the case against his client was politically motivated: "It is quite bizarre, because the chief prosecutor in Sweden dropped the entire case against him, saying there was absolutely nothing for him to find back in September.
Shouldn't the Americans be thanking Assanger for showing them just how leaky their security is.
America doesn't need to say jump anymore. The Tories were falling over themselves to show how much the special relationship meant. Americans were almost embarrassed by the fawning.

The former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has described him as "an anti-American operative with blood on his hands" and called for him to be hunted down like a Taliban leader, while another senior Republican, Mike Huckabee, has said that "anything less than execution is too kind a penalty" for what he has done.
There must be a moral here somewhere. If attacking a state like the USA you remain anonymous and do not flaunt your own vanity. On the back of his endeavours we now have cyber groups springing up that will do more harm than Assange ever could and they won't be able to lay a blame on anyone.
