Do these little thugs not realise that it is because of the activiies of people like Sir Winston that they are free to vandilise his statue?

Tend to agree Salla, as i've watched the news footage, and one of them was attacking a window (at the treasury?) with what looked like (now forgive me, don't know it's proper name) but one of those huge spiked balls things on a chain? What kind of uni student has one of those lieing about their digs surrounded by empty Pot Noodle cups?

Just back from breakfast in the cafe..........had quite a time trying to explain what defacing the statue of Winston Churchill and the outrageous attack on the car of the heir to the throne of the UK and his wife was to do with the increase i student loans.

So, er, what exactly? What would the reverse be - if he'd thought people might someday deface his statue he'd have decided not to fight the Nazis? He chose to fight for freedom; these protesters are choosing to exercise it. If you deny them that freedom, then was Churchill wasting his time after all?

If the police feel the need to arrest someone for peeing against a piece of concrete, I suppose they'd better go ahead. They might argue, as some have on AB threads about Nick Clegg, that all politicians are corrupt and deserve no better. Either way, It's not something I'm going to work myself into a lather about.

jno - you'd think that the students would have a modicum of respect for the man who led the fight for our freedom. I don't suppose he thought that the freedom(s) he was fighting for included the vulgar act of urinating in public.

Still, it was a serious question: what would Churchill have said if he'd been looking down:

"I don't like it but I fought for their right to do it"

or:

"I agree with Hitler, anyone defiling statues should be locked up"?


My guess is the former. At any rate, it's my response. Anyone doing actual damage, like kicking in windows, should be duly charged. But being disrepectful shouldn't be a crime (I'm okay with people being furious about it, though).
