Has anyone recently asked you to show a 'Cheque Guarantee Card' when writing them a cheque?

I know once they would ask you for one, when using a cheque to pay for goods at the supermarket, but most people swipe their card these days.

Will you miss cheques when they finally withdraw them?

AOG,
Sometimes you have to trust.
We move forward,we cannot stay in the past.
I presume one of your ancestors wasa Luddite?
i don't really see how a cheque is safer, as it has all of your bank account details on
Being a pensioner I certainly will as I enter every transaction in my cheque book. That way I know how much I have left in my account at a glance.
I used a cheque this afternoon to pay an odd-job man. As he`s retired and does odd-job work he doesn`t have a credit card system. He came around quickly because he had a cancellation so I wouldn`t have had time to go out to the cash point and get cash. Cheques still come in handy for paying by post as well. They have still got their uses and I will miss them a bit.
bednobs, you pay the butcher, the milkman by cheque?? bet you're popular! just give them cash, I presume you are not spending 1000's !
I do use them occasionally - and I suppose i like the thought of them being there.

People who use them for money gifts will have to resort to gift cards for stores - although some shopping malls issue generic ones that you can use in any store.
well they aren't phasing out cheques just the guarenteeability of them, so for gifts it's still fine but what a pain in the arris for the receiver, I mean great got a cheque off Granny for £10!, got to pay it into my bank and wait a week then go back and get it! what a pain in the proverbial. I just get the SC/acc no and pay it direct! Saves an awful lot of agro for both sides! then they can get it out of the cash machine.
i use cheques frequently. agree they are a convenient and secure way to pay for goods. any cheques anyone sends me gratefully accepted.
// I just get the SC/acc no and pay it direct!... //

What's SC , Geezer ?
Sort Code
Of Course
Do Companies like Amazon etc allow you to do that ?
Only time I use cheques is to pay for charity quizzes I send for. Have put a pound coin in but they have never reached their destination. So yes I will miss them.
It says in the article that "The closure of the system does not mean that people will no longer be able to use cheques, but that those cheques will no longer be guaranteed."

I don't think we'd got anything to worry about then.
I can't stand cheques. Particularly when it comes to the business. If I get a cheque, it means I have drive into town to pay it in, then you have to wait for it to clear, which is never until the following week. It's so easy to transfer the same amount of money online and it usually clears in your account the same day.

Also, cheques are not as safe as you think. The business got sent a cheque for £16k. The cheque got cashed but not by us. We never received it. Someone had intercepted the cheque and somehow managed to pay it into their own account. This meant our customer had to send us another cheque and we £16,000 down until the banks resolved it.
If they did phase them out I would miss them very much. For me it's a necessity to write and accept cheques quite a lot.
I pay our milkman monthly by cheque.

I pay the paper bill monthly by cheque.

I pay our local butcher by cheque.

I pay plumbers, tradesmen etc by cheque.

I send cheques via the post to pay credit card bills.

I send cheques via the post for birtday presents.
I got a shock when I moved to Germany four years ago and opened a bank account - no cheque book. They don't exist here, and payment is either in cash, by debit card or by direct transfer. Credit cards are not commonly accepted and if you have one the balance has to be paid every month (by DD, so no getting out of it). I've got used to it, but I did have to send a couple of sterling cheques to England last year and I prefer them even now. I hate having to carry wads of cash if I'm paying somebody who doesn't take anything else.
I'd be more worried about people giving out their sort codes and account numbers to me, then me sending a cheque....
I use them to pay my son's school lucnhes. He needs to take the money in on a Friday for the following week. I often doen't have enough cash im my purse as I forget. He also has the school lunch every other week, so I write on the back of the cheque what weeks it will cover.
I also use it to pay my mobile hairdresser, as again, I can forget to get cash. It's not like she carries around a card swipe machine!
I think they are very handy indeed.
I wonder when the day will come when we have our bank details bar-coded on our wrists! That would save cheque, cash and card now wouldn't it?
