name for fear of restriction phobia...?
11 Answers
in medical terms it comes under a branch of claustrobphobia...but i dont really have claustrophobia in the normal sense of the word - no problems whatsoever with lifts, small rooms, crowds etc...
but i do when it comes to very thin tunnels, having to sit next to someone in a car that is a squeeze, a bodies width cave, even some pyjamas and clothes can set it off etc...its more a fear of not being able to move or getting stuck ...not that its a small room, but of 'micro spaces'...also i am fine if my arms are free...although doing tiny little fiddly things set its off...(i know, I know....!)
(i have a mad fear of being in a car accident or building collapse or something and either being stuck, or having teh only escape route being a tiny tunnel.. and that scares me more than being injured or killed etc!!
the main effect on me is very physical rather than mental...even though i know im safe etc, i cant stop the 'feeling'...i dont fear getting bed or my clotehs etc if you get me...i dont panic at the 'thought' of it...but i panic if the thought of it brings on the physical symptoms...once they start i react oddly...
god im so weird haha
i just want a name so i can try to address it...is there a phobia just for restriction...not clautrophobia...?
thanks

hi, im not sure really, i suppose i could have been and dont remember it...
i will ask my mum
my first knowledge that i had a form of claustrophobia was when i was probably about 6-7-8 and was playing at a friends house andwe all climbed into the wardrobe...its was large so not a squash...i was near the door at first so felt ok even though it was shut, but when i was moved along to the middle - where the sliding doors cross and stop, i freaked out and had to get out...

I think it's a form of claustrophobia - I too worry about having to escape from somewhere through a tiny tunnel or hatch, particularly if there is an awkward angle - if I have a nightmare, that would be it. I think it's more common than you generally realise. Nothing of this is irrational, if you believe it then it's a fear for you, but one tip I had a long time ago when I was severely agoraphobic: yes, there is a fear, but quite often when you are in this state, it's the "fear of the fear" which makes people afraid of certain situations. Well done, you, for being open about your phobia.

its weird isnt it, its not the being trapped in a fallen building and potentially dying or losing a leg. that bothers me. ..its the fear of getting that horrible feeling i get when i cant move properly, or feel restricted...like a weird tingle, muscle spasm type feeling with a kind of 'shudder/shiver..weird eh?

I have a similar fear. I can't bear having anything tight around my wrists (tight cuffs) and could almost faint if someone puts their hands up near my throat. The worst thing is getting my blood pressure done. Dr. not sure if I have high blood pressure or "white coat syndrome" and I have to wear a blood pressure monitor for 24hrs! I'm dreading it already.
It's called merinthophobia. I have the same thing. If I get constricted, say in a rollercoaster seat, or someone wraps around me tightly, if I sit very VERY still I'm okay. But if I move and my "body" realizes it's stuck, I can't help it, I will thrash around ridiculously until I'm free. It's an awful panicked feeling...
And because of it, I have restless leg sydrom. I am constantly moving, either bouncing my leg, rocking, swaying back and forth when I stand, or moving my arms by playing with my hair. I even rock myself to sleep. It gets on other peoples' nerves more than my own, because I can't stop.

I have the same thing! I always call it claustrophobia but I know it is really related to being restrained, held down or trapped. I can ride on a lift or stand in a closet with the door shut and I am fine. But if someone on that lift stands between me and the door, or someone holds the door to the closet ***, I totally freak out! I think of how terrible it would be to have a car accident that traps me in the car in water, or to be in a building collapse, and I pray that God will just kill me right away if I am ever in that situation. I don’t even want to survive because I can’t take 1 minute of being trapped without my brain exploding! I just decided to look it up today because I call it claustrophobia but know that isn’t quite right. I found Merinthophobia and Cleithrophobia. They seem to be it. I am so bad that I can not wear boots or tight pants. Sometimes if my shirt gets twisted or stuck putting it on over my head, I flip out and have to have someone pull it off me right away! Like trying on clothes at the store and I put a shirt over my head that is too small! For a minute I panic and think I may just die, then I finally struggle out of it. I am glad I live in FL so that I can wear shorts and sandals all year round!
