Is Big Dave's Big Society the same society that the Blessed Margaret said didn't exist. The secret to its success is to convince the public that unpaid volunteers can do as good a job as the low paid redundant council workers. Of course it should all work out well as the volunteers will be managed by highly paid council managers whose jobs have to be protected to manage the volunteers,.The policy appears to be to get rid of 4 low paid workers and keep one highly paid executive to manage 4 unpaid volunteers. Bet these aren't the same 4 redundant workers who have just lost their jobs. How about getting rid of one underworked highly paid executive and keeping the 4 workers - bound to be more productive and cost effective in the long run.
It's not just local authorities. I work for a charity with lots of volunteers who we rely on, but even as volunteers there are costs involved, if minimal, CRB checks and reimbursement of expenses, but we are no longer able to have the funding to support the volunteers.....
