I dont think you can become president of the USA unless you were actually born in the country.

So John McEnroe (the ex tennis player) who was born in Germany while his father was in the army there, cannot become US president (just used as an example)

Yes I seem to recall when he was first standing some republicans tried to make something of it and make out that he was ineligible to stand but nothing came of it.

Judging by the post time and the subject matter and the fact that Longmont is in Colorado I think John is probably just expressing his delight that Colorado voted for Obama

My cousin who lives in the US says there are lots of conspiracy theories as to his birth. she believes he was born in Kenya. Apparently when he was asked for his birth certificate to stand for election, it couldn't be found, in fact there was no record anywhere, so they drew one up saying he was born in Hawaii. The reason given was that Hawaiian records were not always reliable or even kept in a secure place.

I wasn't criticising the questioner, except insofar as the word controversy is generally used to mean that each side has an arguable case. There is no arguable case whatsoever for Obama not being a natural born US citizen, so to call it a controversy is a bit like talking about the round earth/flat earth controversy: there are some nutters who believe that the world is flat, but that doesn't make for a controversy, because any sane person knows it's not.
