Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;
I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

If this is the hot coffee case you refered to it is a bit more complex than that. Plus it has never happened in the UK

Good grief are we still having to cope with this dross after so many years.
guess thats why when i buy a so called hot sausage roll at Greggs its barely warm
I, for one, enjoyed your post Ron - so very, very true (unfortunately).
<guess thats why when i buy a so called hot sausage roll at Greggs its barely warm >

Lol....I quite fancy a Gregg's sausage roll now, mmmm pastry!
That gave me a wry smile too Ron.
Was he related to "I'm better than all you lot" ?
<Was he related to "I'm better than all you lot" ? >

I suspect so, plus "the first to complain if things don't go my way"
I remember him

His first name was sanctimonious

Sanctimoneous common-sense
Ron, can you stop doing two part posts like this please. Instead, post the first part and then post the second part as a response.

Spare Ed
<<a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot>>

Well that's not true for a start.

The cup wasn't steaming. It had a lid on it.

And the insulated body of the cup meant it was possible for someone to pick it up without appreciating what was inside.

That's why a printed warning was considered necessary and damages would be due. Because it was judged that sending out boiling hot liquids so disguised was not very Sensible - common sensible or otherwise.

<<Just about sums the mentality of what is becoming ingrained in our culture & vast areas of society Ron. >>

What does? Writing and spreading things that aren't true?

Agreed Steve, I do recognize these:

<<I Know My Rights
I Want It Now
Someone Else Is To Blame
I'm A Victim >>

<<it's certainly a reality in this one. >>

I seem to recall my old hometown of Liverpool was rather inclined (en masse) to be <<Someone Else Is To Blame - I'm A Victim >>

You're not up there are you by any chance? :-)

Commonsense actually had to go for a deed poll name and changed her name to DaftIdiot-Fleecedby thePiranhas.

Following the award, MuckyDucky Hamburger Corp challenged the award and on appeal it was reduced from the humengous amount to, if I remember right, $450, 000. Commonsense, as she was then, had to pay all this out to the lawyers that had worked on the case so she ended up with zero, zilch, nowt - and when she realised it had even lost after all the expenses on driving to the lawyers and courts, phone bills, advice and all the rest, never mind the stress she had related.

Her lawyers, Su Grabbit and Run, decided to use the money to buy themselves 3 Poshes as a bonus.......
And whiskeyron, this was close to the truth of what happened.
nearly had the amount right $640k on appeal as the discretionary award was reduced.

Nobody knows the final settlement but it has been reported in the States that Liebeck wasnt that well off since...

DTcrosswordfan The Macdonald's Hot coffee case was only mentioned in passing or as a small part of my post, the main content of the post as some other ABers noticed was to bring attention to the lack of common sense unfortunately prevailing in this day & age, this was sent to me in an email & perhaps it was wrong of me but I was of the opinion that it was good enough to share with my fellow ABers. Ron.
