As we have been told so many times by those who swing to the rig politically - positive discrimination is simply racism by another name.

So what steps need to be taken when someone is turned down for a job simply because they have an Asian sounding name?

I do not believe for a moment that Cathay Pacific is in any way 'institutionally racist', but there will be members of staff with prejudices, so how can we make sure everyone has a fair chance?

Obviously, people with 'foreign-sounding' can't just lie on their application forms, pretending they have Anglo-Saxon names...so what's the answer?

I would like to know at bit more about this case . Was he checked up on in other ways and something was discovered that made him ineligible. In view of the fact Cathy Pacific employ hundreds of Asians I would suspect there is more to this story than he has admitted .

Since we are in a high terrorist alert situational, and taking into account it was for an airline position he was applying for, perhaps he should consider changing his Muslim sounding name.

Even our own royal family chose to change its German sounding name, during WW1.
"Should A Muslims Pretend They're White?"

I suppose it's no more necessary than white kids pretendin' dey iz black.
Sounds like to me that he's after a nice pay out for his 'hurt feelings'.
I know many Muslims who ARE white, and many of them are women who married Asian men and kept their own very British names after marriage (from choice and because they can, not for fear of discrimination). If these applicants could prove that they were discriminated against solely because of their names, the company would surely be charged with discrimination!
I agree their is a case of diiscriminisation, but not of coulour. I think anotheoldgit may have got it right.

As for prejudices, we all have them in one way or another, and they'll pop up from time to time.
As they used to say on "not the nine oclock news"....cut their goolies off...next question
