/// Detectives made secret recordings of the gang's plot to attack Mr Smith prior to the brutal assault. ///
Then why wasn't these cowardly savages then arrested before they could inflict those horrible injuries on the teacher?
This brutal crime was 'religiously and racially motivated', so why wasn't these serious charges also added to their charge of being 'guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent', or once again do not these charges apply to members of certain communities?

///This brutal crime was 'religiously and racially motivated'///
from the article: ///Prosecutor Sarah Whitehouse told the court: 'The evidence from what was said on the probe points overwhelmingly to a religious motive for this attack///
Where did race come into it?

They also pleaded guilty - often people plead guilty to a lesser charge - this saves the tax payer money and the victim the associated problems of going to court. It also saves the embarrassing situation of them getting off on a technicality.
No idea why the police didn't arrest them earlier though

Incidentally, whether they plead guilty or not, the religious element should STILL be factored into the sentencing, as it would with any other hate crime.
But before we get too carried away - can someone explain why on Earth teaching this girl about other religions was such a 'thing'. Hundreds of thousands of Muslim girls up and down the country get the same education without so much of a murmur from the Muslim community.

AFAIC - serious assault is serious assault and sentencing should be appropriate.
IMO sentencing should be doubled where an assault was unprovoked (like this one).
This country's legal system is far too lenient on violent crime and is far too focussed on money/property related crime IMO.
I couldn't give a rats @rse that these guys were Muslims, a violent c*** is a violent c*** regardless of their racial/cultural background.

The more you think about it, the more disgusting this story becomes and the more it makes you support the idea of 'hate crimes'.
This crime has nothing to do with 'heat of the moment revenge', or 'gang rivalry' or even 'drunken lads giving each other a kicking'. It was a premeditated attack based solely on religious hatred.
Therefore, the guilty pleas should count for very little. The cowards planned it and have left this teacher scarred for life.
This is exactly the same kind of hate crime that gets gay men beaten to death and should be treated accordingly (although THEY only got a couple of years apiece bizarrely).

If this crime is as presented in the media it should be judged not simply as an assault on a person but as an assault on the fundamental values of our society i.e.
that a teacher can teach the approved syllabus without fear or favour
that the syllabus is approved by the proper authorities not by random relatives
that disliking someone else's ideas is not a justification for violence
Animal Rights activists have the book thrown at them
Perjurers have the book thrown at them
So should these guys.
