Is it now time for National Service to be brought back?

With numerous ex-service camps now becoming vacant due to the decrease in military spending, the fears of the increase of obesity amongst our young, no jobs to go to when leaving school and judging by this report the unfitness among our young, the time is now perfect for the introduction of a National Service scheme.
This need not be a military based National Service, more of a skills training service.
Upon leaving school both boys and girls would be obliged to leave their home surrounding and be shipped to these camps, which would be run by all those redundant service personal and older experienced tradesmen, who are finding it hard to get a job due to their age.
Before anyone says "how is the country going to pay for this scheme"? Well taking into account the savings in the various spin-offs of this scheme, it would be almost self financing.

/// Aog would you have a big sign over the front gates saying,
Arbeit macht frei ///
I ask you? this is not funny just pathetic and rather insensitive to all those who lost friends and relatives in those death camps.
If you can't make a more intelligent contribution than this, please don't bother again.

triggerhippy that should be triggerhappy, because you are that quick to fire off one of your rants before seeing the whole question you were aiming at.
/// you would not get my daughter, you would have to put me and her in prison together with a million others - all so you can stop 40odd thousand people claiming.///
If you had cared to read and take in the whole question, it wasn't just about these 86,000 (I don't know where you got 40 odd thousand from) they were just a small portion of the problem, I was talking about all school leavers who are not taking further education or taking up a job.

AOG can you not see a correlation with the words i used that you have had removed.
It was not just Jewish people who went to the camps, Union officials, gays, communsts and anyone else the government did not like at the time.
Now we had some out of work youngsters that this government and you do not like and you want to start up work camps for all those that leave school.
your words // Upon leaving school both boys and girls would be obliged to leave their home surrounding and be shipped to these camps,//
If you translated the words i put it is something like Work Sets you Free

/// "Upon leaving school both boys and girls would obliged to leave their home surrounding and be shipped to these camps...."
Jawohl, mein Fuehrer! In Ordnung! Ihre Wunsch ist mein Befehl! ///
Oh no, not another offensive answer for the Ed to remove, can't you just grow up?
National Service 1946 - 1960.
"Upon reaching the ages of 18 to 21 men would be obliged to leave their home surrounding and be shipped to camps around the country...."
Similar words, were these also on the orders of the Fueher?
No but I bet it would make the likes of you & co shiver to the tips of your toes.
That said I now refuse to take the trouble to answer any more such silly posts from you, triggerhippy or SUSPECT

Isn't that what this is all about? The link I mean.
I'm not agreeing with AOG about taking ALL the young 'uns off to National Service, infact not even sure i agree with that. Would these young 'uns in NS be the ones defending us if war broke out whilst they're in service? No thank you! But there should be something, no idea what, in place for the lazy beggers who won't get a job.
Weed out those with disabilities, carers (genuine ones!) or anyone else who genuinely can't work for whatever reason, and you're left with the dross. Those are the ones "something" should be targetting.

AOG, your idea has already been tried. I quote from a website about Weeting Castle/Weeting Hall, in Norfolk:
"Weeting Hall, Norfolk. Demolished 1954. During the 1930's Weeting Hall was remodelled as an instructional centre by the government, taking in young, long-term unemployed men from areas of high unemployment during the Depression and giving them a three-month crash course in heavy manual work, with mixed results."

My late uncle went to Weeting Hall in the 1930's, from Leeds, and he sent photos home that showed wooden huts (barracks) used as living accommodation in the grounds of the Hall. The "residents" were marched, army-style, from place to place, with their mugs, enamel, held behind them in the left hand. All that's left of the place now is the Hall's coach house. I don't know what effect, if any, it had on my uncle, because this happened before I was born.

Boo
/// Would these young 'uns in NS be the ones defending us if war broke out whilst they're in service?///
Of course not, what made you come to that conclusion? Please don't read into it something that doesn't exist.
I specifically pointed out that it would not be a military National Service.
Eg, /// This need not be a military based National Service, more of a skills training service.///
What I was visualising was places where the youngsters would be sent to (shipped to, must use that word again) away from their home environment, away from their 'gangs' to take part in various skill training, and be instilled with some discipline at the same time.
They would have to be sent away, so they could give 100% attention to what they had chose to learn.
Can't just have them turning up at their own community halls to do a few hours training, then back home to hang around the streets, that is of course if they chose to attend another lesson.

Maybe Cameron is already tackling the situation although its for 16+ year olds and could be expanded:
