It seems at last the voice of the people is being heard, and I do hope that it will not be just another report to be read and ignored by those in power.

I agree with that pixi, when I was made redundant after the shoe company closed last August (09) I went to sign on and within a week i had found my own job, no thanks to anyone at the jobcentre who did nothign whatsoever to help in any way, they were genuinely shocked when i went in and told them at my first signing that i had already found a job but could only start on October 1st. The woman I saw told her work colleagues in front of he, as though she had had a hand in it all! If I had relied on them and not shown my own initiative I would never have found a job, but what about those without the ability and resources to even know how to look for work? ridiculous system,

Why do you think only football hooligans are against immigration?

I think you will find it is across a wide range of the population (as was found when the BNP members list was leaked - it was all ages, all social groups, all parts of the country, all job types including vicars and teachers).

The problem is the British moan about something but never get off their backside and do anything about it.

5,054 people or 50,000 it matters little, but enough to get the likes of former Foreign Secretary David Miliband and campaigning Left-wing Labour MP Jon Cruddas sitting up and taking notice.

No often accused right-wing rant or Daily Mail sensationalising, the poll was part of an official report.

Regardless of the diversionary tactics of pixi- or dotty they stand for nothing, in the scheme of things, enough to say that the report was produced for the Searchlight Education Trust, and will be officially unveiled by former Foreign Secretary David Miliband and campaigning Left-wing Labour MP Jon Cruddas tomorrow.

Disturbing enough for Mr Cruddas, to tell The Observer that the findings pointed to a ‘very real threat of a new potent political constituency built around an assertive English nationalism’.

Looking forward to the report being unveiled tomorrow.

when I come on this site I sometimes feel like I'm the only one that's proud to be British and really like the UK just the way it is - no its not perfect, there are always going to be challenges to try and make things better BUT its still the greatest place in the world to live (.... 100 millions immigrants can't all be wrong lol)

I think I've said this before - but I don't mind as you guys that knock the UK and seem to imply its a joke / rubbish / horrible / crime ridden cess pit etc also seem to keep repeating yourselves.

Why can't you take some pride in your country?

I don't understand why people who think it's so vile here just don't move and live somewhere else. I have friends who moved to Spain, others to Canada, etc., they have a good life there. I like it here in the UK.

I don't know how old you are, but taking into account you are much, much more younger than myself.

Taking that into account and the point that you think that the UK is the greatest place in the world to live, well maybe but only from your own perspective, and there is nothing wrong with that

But will you think the same when you become as old as me, and perhaps another 100 millions plus immigrants have settled here in the meantime, will you still hold the same feelings that you do now?

Well that is exactly what some older ABers feel, the England we once loved, no longer exists, mostly (not all) due to the huge influx of multi-ethnic multi-cultural persons now settled here.

Why should the indigenous population move abroad?

Those who have taken the chance, have generality been self sufficient young or wealthy retired persons, (no welcoming arms out there with offers of a houses and benefits)

But having said that due to the recession, the bubble has burst and those in Spain have seen their property values plummet and their savings and pensions diminish, while if one wants to settle in Australia, one has to tick all the boxes, to get in.

I realise it must be difficult to be growing old in a country that might seem to have left you behind but I think the same is true for every elderly generation and the discussion is probably a debate for a different question / topic. However you are right my opinions now will almost certainly not be my opinions later however I hope I remember that flexibility and a willingness to change are some of the strengths of this country and that demographics alone cannot make or break us.

Pixi, the government seem to think a poll of 5054 is of sufficient size to establish a trend.
Had it been 50,000 polled a similar ratio would have been returned.
Not changing the 60% or 52% by any great margin at all.

How do I know a similar ratio would be returned? I'm not an expert but the team of statistical analysts who conducted the poll are.
Is there any scientific reasoning to back up your theory that given a larger number such a radical swing, as you propose, would have happened?

No actually she is indicating how limited the interpretation of the statisics would be as it is amongst a small group.
