Charles Lindbergh was always playing practical jokes. A ladder was found leaning against the bedroom window. the baby was found a few days later a few blocks away. It might have been Charles that did it himself, & then all went wrong, who knows?
Baby Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped. A ransom was demanded, and paid. The baby's body was found months later in a shallow grave in nearby woods. (The Lindberghs lived in the country, not in the city).
There was a BBC Radio 4 play about the kidnapping recently. Have a look at target=_blank>http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/discover/archive_featu

If
If you can get RealPlayer to work, you can hear the play on that site. Otherwise, I've got an audio-cassette you can have. If you want to, email me on [email protected] and I'll send it to you.

Bruno Hampton was arrested and executed for the crime. He always maintained his innocence and so did his wife who was his alibi. As said before, Lindbergh was a practical joker and it is thought he was taking the baby out the window to fake a kidnap when he dropped the child and he died. He buried the child and acted out the kidnap for real. If that is what really happened then he let an innocent man die for his mistake.
His name was Richard Bruno Hauptmann. For an Answerbank feature on Lindbergh, click here: http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/Article.go?id=1039
