Masculine Gay Women
17 Answers
This is by no means meant to be an insulting question, but there were three lesbians on TV this morning, all of which looked quite masculine. I'm not saying that all gay women look like men, but why do many of them feel the need to look masculine and why, if a woman is gay, would she be attracted to a manly looking woman, if she's attracted to women? I hope I haven't offended anyone with this, but it is a genuine question.

What lesbians find attractive in other women may help understand why they would go for a manly looking woman. Perhaps it is not the appearances but rather mental qualities that attract gay women to each other. It would be interesting to get a lesbian's take on this.
i would ask the same question as nicola jane tho, if youre attracted to women, why to a masculine woman, but the same can be said of gay men who are sterotypically very femininine even tho they're attracted to men. i dont have any problems with the physiology of it, but i am curious about the psychology of it.
Not meaning to deviate, but just replying to incitatus. Yes there are many 'effeminate' male singers/entertainers etc. I love Elton John music, but I don't lust after him. I think Julian Clary is extremely good looking, but I don't lust after him! So what point are you trying to make? The question is after all, about masculine gay women!
everyone finds different qualities attractive in different people. I'm sure there some weird people out there who wouldn't find mrsbobley attractive, much as I may not find some of the lovely married female answerbankers attractive but it doesn't mean that none of these women are. beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all.
Sorry to deviate from the question but I cannot let Smudge's comment (Masculine gay women - the sheer thought of 'them' make me want to puke!) go without comment. It's those inverted commas, Smudge. That and the need to "puke". It all makes you sound like such a bigot, which I am sure you are not. So perhaps you would like to clear that misconception up.
I have enjoyed friendship with a couple of gay couples, and i can happily disuede the popular heterosexual stereotype of lesbian relationships - that they consist of a 'man' (a butch lesbian) and a 'woman' (a femme lesbian), to fulfil the heterosexual stereotypes. In fact, the dynamics of lesbian relationships are far more subtle and constantly changing, and although some couples may prefer the external appearences as shown, it doews not follow that they fulfil their 'assigned' roles within the relationship al the time, or even any of the time. As a straight man, I don't claim to understand gay relationships, but straight people should avoid stereotyping of any sttyle - it's restricting and cliched. Live and let live say I.
You are right JimmyButtons, I am not a bigot, but I have my opinions the same everyone else. If my two children had been gay, I would have been devastated, but would have supported them. I have a 42 year old nephew who happens to be gay & I love him for who he is. The thought of Lesbian/Gay sexual activities repulse me, especially when exploited & I see nothing wrong with that at all. It probably stems back to the Adam & Eve thing & my understanding of hetrosexual relationships in my upbringing. I hope that clarifies it for you.

I don't think that it is some gay women who look masculine so much as straight women feeling that they have to fulfill the male stereotype of what a woman should look like. High Heels are not comfortable. Push up bras are not comfortable. Skirts are draughty. Big fleeces are warm, big boots support your feet better.
