The family Booldawg are off to a local village May fair this afternoon. It includes the children from local school dancing round the may pole.

Someone said last year its one of only a few may fairs that still hold that tradition. Is this true? I remember at school they always had the may pole thing. It was one of the first introduction to social awareness when I never got picked year after year!

I myself will of course not be able to witness such an event that will evoke bad chldhood memories of non-acceptance and seek solace in the beer tent.

I've not seen it for years around this way and we are normally a hotbed of quaint and strange village traditions in this area.
How lovely Booldawg, nice & traditional! Hope you all have a great day, let us know how it went. Happy beer solace :0)
A quick look at Youtube suggests that there are plenty of places where the tradition lives on. (I've seen Maypole dancing in many parts of the country)

There's a Maypole in Holywood, Co Down. It must be one of a very few in Ireland.

Twas a lovely afternoon. The man on the PA said its one of less than 20 villages in the UK that still has a proper May queen crowning ceremony and Maypole dancing.
I know the feeling Booldawg. That's why I can never watch a nativity play. They never even chose me to be the back half of the donkey the year half the cast went down with chickenpox.

We didn't do Maypole dancing at school, but if we had, they'd have been hard pushed to even let me carry the box with the ribbons in it.
I think I must have been a curiously unattractive child because I was never picked for anything either and if I had been I expect I would have messed it up. However, I never lacked for boyfriends when I got older so I suppose I must have blossomed in some way.lol!!

If it was a representation of me, it'd be May matchstick dancing

Glad you enjoyed your family day out Booldawg.
Our village has maypole dancing, but just to be awkward we do it at whitsuntide (or there abouts), I think it is even the first week of June this year!
