Our cat has dark snotty marks in his nostrils...

A couple of weeks ago we adopted 2 gorgeous 7 month old cats from a very reputable animal shelter, both fit and well and up to date with all their jabs,etc.
Over the past week we've noticed that one of them started to look as if he had some sort of dark discharge in his left nostril (it wasn't runny and looked at first as if he just had something stuck) he now has both nostrils in the same condition and we wondered if anyone has had this happen to them?
Both cats are wonderfully happy and both appear to be in perfect health apart from poor Fred's nose...I'm going to phone the vet tomorrow but any advise from any answerbankers out there would be great.

The colour sounds about normal - is there an awful lot of it?

Hi karenmac60...no there isn't much at all...it just looks as if someone has dabbed the end of his nostrils with a brown felt-tip. footymum x

my cat had something like this.. and then I found out he has an allergy to mites. he'd been cleaning and biting at his skin, and got blood on his nostrils. it can look nasty, but that's what it was.

If he's light coloured or has a pale nose you'll be more likely to see ordinary snot, which is dark in cats. If he seems fine other than that and his nose isn't irritating him I wouldn't worry about it.

interesting post as I was wondering the same about our two new kittens... one has darker area just by the opening of each nostril!
Not runny - or sneezy.. though has sneezed but that could be dust I guess!

Eyes bright and seems to be in perfect health otherwise!
