If the ship got into difficulty and had to call into a port, and could no longer continue with the cruise, you'd have to return overland from whatever country you'd ended up in. Getting through immigration, there, and also when entering the UK, would be no problem if you had your passport to wave at them. Otherwise, it could be difficult proving not only your identity, but also your nationality.
I went t France a few years ago, just waved passport on outward journey, cming home had to show the passport. Passed them over, Official said can I have yours madam, I said you have it, he said you do not have a beard madam. He passed mine back, it was my brothers, he has a beard. We had rented a Gite in France for the whole family for Xmas, and somehow muddled up passports. Never looked at them after the holiday. Had a problem getting back into9 the country, taken to special holding area. Lots of questions and phone calls. It was a bit worrying at the time, Eventually let us back in though.
