Not really apposite as all the SILENCE signs seem to have disappeared from libraries. My local one is noisier than Morrisons. I think the joke is LOL (laugh out loud) but because libraries are traditionally places of silence the author has removed the OL bit (out loud) leaving just L.

I worked in the library for many years and we always LOL especially at some of the requests, one reader asked for a good romance book by Milton Boons. Another reader sent her son with a note requesting a book on The Female Cycle, he lost it and came and asked for a book about women's bicycles.
