Today at my local rubbish tip I was getting rid of some tree cuttings and an old boy pulled up next to me, he opened the back of his car and asked one of the staff what bin he should put his mattress in.

He pointed to the bin marked household rubbish then walked off, the old boy then started to drag the mattress out of his car and then struggling to drag it from his car to the steps of the bin another two staff walked past him so I offered to help him, I told him to let go of the mattress and then took it up the stairs and chucked it into the bin.

I then went back and threw the rest of his stuff away for him.

The old chap then tried to give me a five pound note for helping him but I told him to keep it and get himself a drink.

He grabbed my hand and thanked me and the look in his eyes was so sincere it made me want to chuck one of those lazy hi viz wearing skip monkeys into one of the bins!!!!!!

Sorry rant over

obviously there was no money to be had for scrap value on a mattress or they would have bit his arm off.
Good for you for helping him, Elvis.. nice one :o)
Good for you ELVIS68 for helping the old fellow - rant on!!
Good for you xx

I would have done the same except I would have made Ginge do it!! :-)
They sound like the miserable gits round our tip (recycling centre, as the council would have us call it).
Well done you Elvis. No doubt there's some ridiculous H&S reason they can't help.
Good for you Elvis....pity he doesn't live near "our" local dump....High Green near Sheffield....a great set of lads they meet you with a smile and help all they can......funny I just thought all these sites were the same....obviously not :-(
too many instances like this sadly, good for you for helping.
They are exactly the same around here, my neighbour has a disability badge and he has to practically beg them for help. Total salad chefs:(
These "jobs worths" make my blood boil - it's nice to know there are still helpful people about. Well done!
you are a good boy Elvis...xx
Whenever we've had a load that needs to go to the dump my dad always sends me up there because he knows the blokes will see a pathetic young girl struggling with heavy stuff and rush over to help. He's never been wrong.

I'm sure if the old guy asked they would have helped. Although they should really have offered to when they saw him struggle.
how did he get it into his car in the first place?

And if he knew he was going to struggle getting it back out again, why not take someone with him?

Did he think to ask one of the skip guys to help him? I'm sure they wouldn't have said no!
They are the same at our local tip ELVIS, bunch of bone idle ( payed by council tax ) tw@ts.
Maybe he is unlucky Boo and has no good neighbours. More strength to your arm Elvis, you are one of the good guys.
Still doesn't explain how he got it into his car in the first place then?
-- answer removed --
Boo, I have got rid of a mattress at the tip in the past, this is how i got into my car at the time ( Ford Mondeo hatch ). I folded down the rear seats, removed the parcel shelf and rolled up the mattress and tied it up so that it stayed rolled up, put it in the car and took it up the tip.
well that explains how you got yours in your car, lol- thanks :-)

But I was asking, how he got his in...well his car! It's a natural assumption if he got it in, he can get it out again and obviously move it.
Maybe he had help to get it in!!!
