Litter

Lot's of talk of people littering at the moment. Do you throw litter?

I have never dropped litter (knowingly) since I went to Germany when I was 12. It was so clean it made me realise how bad England was.

I often see where people have emptied their car ashtray into the gutter. How much harder is it to bring it in the house an empty it?

Would you confront someone who dropped litter?

We have litter cameras in our town centre. They announce can the person in the blue jumper please pick up their litter

No I don't and yes I have.

The latest was a car parked up alongside school waiting for their offspring to leave, and the passenger opened the door and dropped a coke can as i was walking past. Quick as a flash i bent down, picked it up and lobbed it back through the door before they had a chance to close it whilst saying " i think you've dropped this".

I didn't hang around to see/hear their reaction!

i hate it, really hate it. my coat pockets and bag are always crammed full of receipts and other rubbish. what annoys me even more is when i see people leaving litter when a bin is close buy. where i live we have a few takeaways and you always see chip wrappers everywhere there are 4 bins in that small area and the lazy Mangetouts still throw the wrappers on the floor

I think I would shout if I seen them in the act.

It's disgusting and lazy.

When my ones were younger, we came out the sweetie shop, they took the wrappers off and put them in the bin. A couple came up to me and said what a lovely thing to see. I still have to check their pockets before washing their clothes.

I also shout at folk 'excuse me, you've dropped something'

I've slung someone out of my car for throwing litter out of the window.

Just seen this on the news. No I dont drop litter, was drummed into me from a very early age not to - my parents would have gone mad!

I've challenged people and had a serious amount of verbal for it

Even though I politely say excuse me I believe this is yours,,,
I usually have a plastic bag in my handbag for litter...exception being apple cores which I am happy to throw under a bush as blackbirds like fruit

Just remembered, I was on the train a while ago and there was a very well dressed woman opposite me eating an orange. When she finished she just threw all the peel on the floor. I couldnt believe it, and wasnt going to say anything but it was really annoying so eventually i said to her " excuse me, you've dropped your orange peel". She just looked at me and carried on reading her book.

I always bring all my llitter home. When the kids were small they always knew they had to put any waste into my special shopping bag, which I always carried with me. In the bag I also carried a small towel, a flannel in a plastic bag and a small bar of soap. Prepared for everything!

i see this all the time, careless and unnecessary. I only did once, not even sure why, perhaps it was because some one had shoved this leaflet in my hands, a religious document of some sort and not thinking i threw it on the ground. A nice policeman asked me what i was doing, i apologised, and picked it up and placed into a bin. so not i don't throw litter as a rule, and anyone who does is lazy and inconsiderate. People leave their food leftovers on buses and trains, why?

One reason I moved from Kettering Ummmm was the litter. It must be the dirtiest town in Northants. Council workman sat on my wall once to have lunch and left food and wrappings in the garden...I found him! Was he rude?!! Told me I was a fussy b***h and the rats would eat it at night anyway.
I do tell people, nicely and innocently, that they have dropped something and it could be important. A friend did have a knife pulled on him for telling a lad to pick up his rubbish though.

Ummmm, I remember you saying a while ago about ashtrays emptied in gutters, I was quite shocked people actually do that. It's gross. As a smoker I wouldn't dream of doing that.

I despise people who litter. How hard is it just to keep hold of something until you pass a bin. Or keep something in your car until you get home. (the door pockets in my car are regularly filled with with crap that needs chucking).

With ciggies, I do find there are not enough ashtray bins in towns but if I smoke I stub it out on the bottom of a wall and make sure it's right out then chuck the butt in a bin. It's really not hard.

I dont drop litter and dont know anyone who does...I see loads though :-(

No, I don't drop litter. I really hate it. And it's not just an urban problem, although out in the countryside the litter seems to involve larger objects and is called fly-tipping. I can't understand the mentality of it. In most town centres a litter bin will generally be within short walking distance.

I tell anyone off for dropping litter – I absolutely hate it - but I was parked at the train station waiting to pick my husband up when a rough-looking bloke, aged about 20, walked past and just chucked a beer can in the road. Without thinking, I opened the window and said, ‘Hey! Pick that up! There’s a bin right there!” Immediately the words flew from my mouth I thought ‘Oh crikey! What have I done?’, fully expecting, at the very least, a punch in the face. But no. He just sheepishly picked it up and put it in the bin. Phew! :o)

There are some people who actually believe that by dropping litter keeps people in jobs!! Walkers here have a tendancy of picking up cans and bottles thrown into the hedgerows and putting them on the branches; don't know why...

I don't drop litter but I'm not sure that I'd be brave enough to confront someone doing so. Where we used to live we were end of terrace and one of the major pathways through the estate ran down the side of our garden, it was mind boggling how much litter found its way into our garden. We could go out once a week & practically fill a dustbin bag with what was thrown into it

I hate to say this, but when I was a lot younger I did used to litter (sorry), but now I take a bag with me and pick up any cans/bottles that I see. I agree about cigarette butts, I have a neighbour who doesn't smoke in her house, so she just throws her butts on the street and it looks awful.

Litter cameras ... what a brilliant idea!

I've occasionally hooted and flashed my headlights at a car in front if someone has dropped something out of the window ... but only when I'm in the big car, LOL.

When I think of the times that I've dropped things like sweet wrappers, and then chased them down the road trying to stomp on them, it does bug me when people open their car window and chuck out a McDonald's wrapper.

I don't litter....think it stems from my upbringing in WW2.....not a lot to litter with in those days no drinks cans or plastic ..bottles and jars were worth money and anything that would burn went on our home fire....I tend to pick up other peoples's litter myself.....

Worse than litter which at least can be swept up is IMO chewing gum....a national disgrace...even international maybe......wall to wall in my home town, Ugh!
