jeez, why on earth aren't the media saying that the left-handed person is playing a rightie?

Wot on earth is so wrong with being left-handed?

Because that rightie is Andy Murray. If it was two foreigners I doubt right or left would be mentioned.
Question Author
exactly, do you think the media are getting their excuses in early? :-)
1. Because it is unusual to be a leftie

2. It is more unusual to be a leftie and a professional athlete

3. It's known as an advantage in most sports to be a leftie

That's why they mention it.
Question Author
1 I'm a leftie

2. Not a professional athlete but was blooming good at hockey and tennis

3. Yep, it's good to be a leftie :-D
coz of ball spin. I noticed earlier Andy had Scots flag icon listed at his name. Will see if thats lucky for him.

Ed
It is even more of an advantage to be a leftie and a rightie - e.g Ronnie O'Sullivan
Question Author
Ronnie has his demons, but is a highly talented snooker player.
They make awkward opponents in boxing too.
So are you entirely sinister, Albs - or do you fancy the odd bit of ambidexterity occasionally :)
My late mother in law was left handed and used to be "smacked out of it" in school. She was also "smacked out of" speaking Welsh. Neither beatings worked:-)
I'm kackhanded too - its brill
I'm aquadextrous; I can turn the bath taps on with both feet!
Question Author
late mother was a leftie and had it smacked out of her at school, the only thing she did rightie was to write.

Dave, ambiguity and ambidexterity are good attributes :-D

Horseshoes!! How are you doing my dear?

FGT, it's great being kack-handed :-D
I'm fine thank you Alba. Haven't been on AB very much as been away on holiday, then had a little job for a couple of weeks.

My friend is left handed but throws darts with her right. OH is right handed and deals cards with his left!
It all sounds rather sinister to me.
Not a good start for the rightie...
Arrrgh...
I'm going to have to remember that one, vulcan42. If I can, that is: I'm right-handed:)
An odd thing is that Phil Mickelson, the 'leftie' golf champion, is naturally right-handed. It might be a help on ordinary courses, and to ordinary players, because the courses are designed to hinder right-handers who slice or fade the ball, but most pros naturally hook it or draw it, so he'd be as hampered as a right-hander.

But it's an advantage to be leftie in most sports. The right-hander doesn't meet many , whereas they meet plenty of right-handers. There are two sports that don't permit left-handed play. One is polo. The other may be hockey.
