Whilst doing exceptionally well with his studies in his short time in England, (for which he must be very much praised), is there any reason why his family should also be granted permission to stay?

No. He and his family have to return, although it looks as though he can apply for a student visa.

As his family left Syria 2 years ago, why must they be deported to Afghanistan?
Shouldn't they return to the country from which they came?
Conditions in Syria presently mean that no one should be returned there until the crisis is over, so surely they ought to be allowed to remain until stability returns?

No (Next!) Plenty of students get into Oxford when they live abroad. There's no reason to allow them to stay , so why should their families ,who have no right of abode, stay here?

Chemistry, Physics and Maths don't require the same degree of understanding a 'tongue' as they are pure 'languages' themselves.

He tape-recorded his lectures and played them back to make sure that he understood what was said.

Well, in my day and I presume it still is the case, entrance examination to ANY UK university is dependent upon a broad base of subjects and not just the subjects that one is going to study at University.

There is NO Entrance Examination into OU.

He appears to have satisfied the A-Level Grade requirements OU attached to his offer.

I believe they came from Iran originally, so I think it would be safe for them to return there.

Bazile.......I don't know what i believe..............that is very impressive and couldn't have been done in my era.....BUT....things have changed.

To get A's in your Higher School Cert in 3 subjects was outstanding, now you see pupils getting 7-10 straight A's.

I am clearly not comparing like with like.
