Can anyone recommend good puncture proof and they MUST BE puncture proof bike tyres. It's a mid -range mountain bike and the tyres are 26 X 1.95.
Many thanks!
If anyone invented a puncture proof bike tyre you would have no difficulty finding them, they would probably be the only ones on the market.
The so-called puncture resistent tyres have a thin band of kevlar built in to them but it wont stop a nail, thorn or piece of glass penetrating, it's more of a sales gimmick.
Solid (polyurethane foam) tyres have been available for years.
It seems from Zacs link that the technology has moved on a bit now and they are becoming more affordable and hard wearing,
The tyres in Zacs-Master link have been around for quite some time. I tried an early version many years ago, although whether they were made by the same people I have no idea.
They were based on a polyurethane construction and foam filling and must admit they never deflated. Unfortunately they gave a bit of a 'hard' ride and the grip wasn't up to 'rubber' tyre levels. That was a long time ago, so no doubt have improved since.
I went back to kevlar lined tyres, fitted with slime inner tubes. Not had a puncture for many years.
I use Ultraseal in my car tyres and I know they do a kit for bicycles. I've had a fair few nails etc in the tyres and they seal almost instantly when the object is removed.
Douglas, this is a very dangerous, a nail in a tyre will damage the cord structure, removing it and trusting on that glop to repair the the damage can lead to a severe blow-out of the tyre, any damage should be examined and if it isn't too bad it can have a rubber plug inserted from the inside, otherwise the safest thing is to replace the tyre.
Regarding bike tyres, why are these sealants not used by professional racing cyclists?
Zacs; Believe me - I've done a lot of bike-racing (long ago!), waiting for support and the fitting a new wheel can cost you the race and with the professionals a lot of money. Two years back some nutter scattered tacks on the road before the Tour de France came through, and the damage was enormous, but no one would want to descend at high speed on a punctured tyre with the pressure being held by some glop inside.
Those materials are purely for get-you-home use, slowly and with care at that.
I use the plastic inserts between the tube and tyre.
My bike in Turkey needed repais every day because of thorns. I thought it was repaired and every time we got to the apartment for a holiday the tyres were flat!
Put these in and no more problems. !! 2 years now and still inflated!
