Toothache

Hi all, I got one of those dreaded toothaches.  Went to dentist, said tooth is decaying close to nerve, going back in next Weds to sort it out.  In the meantime, he's given my Erythromycin 250mg tablets, which are not easing the pain in any way.  I've had 6 hours sleep in the last 78 hours, the only way I can stop the pain is to sloosh water around in my mouth, but the pains back again after 5 mins. Anbesol & bonjella are not helping at all.

I was gonna take paracetomol but it said not to use if using pain killer above 75mg. Is Erythrowatsit classed as a painkiller?  Is there anything else I can take along side it?

So glad I don't have to go through childbirth!!!

Erythro is an antibiotic.  You need painkillers.  Nurofen is helpful with toothache.  Talk to a pharmacist.  Warm, salty water can also help if you swish it around your mouth.  It seems you have an infection and it needs to have cleared up a bit before any 'drilling' etc. can be done.  And make sure you go back to the dentist on Wednesday!

No doubt the toothache is causing you to become even more insane! Have you tried Corsodyl mouthwash?  Dentist recommended it to me when I was having trouble with my wisdom teeth.  Basically keeps the gums very clean - may help if you've got some infection, not a painkiller though.  Very strong tasting but you'll get used to it even if your food doesn't taste the same for a bit.  Can get it in chemists and pretty much all supermarkets too.

Clove Oil is very good for toothache

I'd second that Clove oil is especially good because you don't have to wait x hours between dosages. Get some and carefully dab it on the gum in the affected area it should numb the area like a local anaesthetic.

You should be able to get it at chemists

I agree with the clove oil - it smells and tastes horrible but it works!

Try rubbing a mix of Bonjela sensitive tooth paste in to your gum (apply one after the other) not as nasty as the clove oil as it can burn and numb your mouth as well as the tooth. Also crazy but true try letting a sweet such as white mice, caramac or chocolate melt in your mouth against the gum the relief though quick does not last for long but hey it's an excuse to eat sweets!

incidentally, you can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together. As long as they are both pure forms you can alternate brufen and paracetamol to get max dose in 24 hours

Plus, I'd ask your dentist to increase your dose of erythromycin to 500mg. 250mg is a very low dose

Hi Insane Wally, I had the most raging toothache last year I was taking Anadin or Paracetamol but the pain  kept coming back. A woman I worked with told me to take Codis it did the trick, it contains Aspirin incase you are allergic to it. I agree with Clove Oil that does work, I used it but it taste's fowl, I found a tube of toothache reliever in my supermarket called Dentogen which is in gel form and has clove oil in it I found that much better to apply. I hope you feel better soon.  :-)

When you have the real toothpain ..its no use talking about painkillers..just do as i did ..pull the bastare

I had the same problem recently, well still do kind of but have had a temporary filling....waiting to afford root canal sugery :( but I have never been in such pain! Clove oil didn't work because it was my nerve that was exposed, it numbed around my gum but unfortunately not the nerve. Panadol fast was the best painkiller that I tried, and I tried a lot! It worked on me, although I was feeling pain within an hour again. But they are quick way to relieve the pain slightly.

I used Solpadein on the advice of my dentist some years ago when the tooth he was trying to extract snapped and I had to wait a few days for admission to the dental clinic to have the root cut out. It worked great!  He told me at that time that Solpadein was the most powerful non-prescription drug on the market, so, if you do consider using it perhaps you should be check with the pharmacist before taking it on top of other pain killers!

I went through all that and tried everything including nurofen, clove oil cold water helped for a minute then it came back. then i tried paramol thought it would be rubbish but it got rid of the pain for at least four hours so i got some sleep good luck

Tried whisky-acts as an antiseptic (alcohol obv) - numbs pain and you will get a good nights sleep which I suspect more than anything you are needing.

Dont take with painkillers especially paracetamol.

After all if it was good enough for the cowboys .....!!!

Thank you for all your suggestions, I tried the clove oil but unfortunately that didn't work for me, & yes, it is fowl.  I've got Anadin Extra which works for a couple of hours, ibuprofen didn't help.  I'll give Panadol & Solpadein a go next.
