So, this is the year I get married to my amazing girl. 16 weeks to go!!!
I adore her and respect her infinitely but I know the journey we are about to embark on will not be without its hurdles.
So my AB friends, what is the key to a successful marriage and who on here has the longest marriage??
My nan and grandad were married 75 years and only had eyes for each other the entire time, but how rare is that these days?

Extremely rare.

There isn't one......it is just "pot luck."
Well, 25 years in I'd say it was a bit of give and take, common interests and support when it's needed. Oh, and not shagging around.
I've been with my husband for 23 years and married for 17 so consider it to be successful. I'm not sure there's any formula to it to be honest, just love and respect each other, I know communication is the key as is honesty but other than that I have no idea. I think you can overthink relationships when really if you're with the one you love you'll make it work naturally.

Not helpful I know, sorry :)

Going back to my grandparents, they used to bicker and argue every day. We always said thats what kept them going. But you could see the total devotion to one another underneath, really sweet.
Marry the right partner, both of my Ex wives were unfaithful but how could you foresee that when marrying!

I agree with sqad to a degree, it is luck of the draw to a large extent.

Aside from the jitters that many must get, I am sure people embark upon marriage thinking, this is it forever. But so many marriages break down, how do you truly know? So I guess luck of the draw. I hope we dont hurt each other, I have been the happiest I have ever been the last 3 years since we met

Haha guess that might be true Snags
we are in our 41st year we've had a lot of time apart (hubby was in navy nearly 28 years lol)had quite a few barnies but one or the other always apologised we make decisions together.
I'm not married, but have been with OH 20 years (since i was 19) and we have 4 children. Communication and respect is very important. But mainly, you just need the right person. Someone can bring out the best or worst in you, so the personality combination is vital.

So why spoil it by getting married?
cant beat Mallyh's 41 years. This year we will have been together 40 years and married for 38. Not been easy but the children and grandchildren are such a wonderful thing. Marriage is all about compromise.
Always remember that the wife is right!!!!
Jesus some embittered marrieds here...
perhaps we need a few embittered bachelors for balance

perhaps it is a function of age and not marriage

Oh and marry a Roman Catholic - If Charles had married a roman catholic like he wanted to do but was not allowed to by law - he would not have had any of that trouble with Dodi.
Yeah agreed Mal, decision making together is vital
Yes, peter. Always let him think he made the decision:D
The key to a successful marriage lies in two little words. "Yes dear" (unless the question is "Does my bum look big in this").
Being each other's best friend.
Been together 28 , married for 23. Trust I would say is the main thing, if you you don't have trust what's the point of being with someone. We are like chalk and cheese, very little in common other than 4 kids, but it has worked.

Thanks all.
