Well, I find it credible, though the reports are somewhat dramatic in style. This is precisely how new dictators have acted for thousands of years; Ancient Rome had the same with its emperors; because they are all conscious that the seeds of a rebellion lie with the families of the men they have to remove as potentially powerful threats.
