Self Assemble Returns To B&q, Help Please

I bought online 3 bedroom units from B&Q, after assembling one of the units, a wardrobe, I was not happy with the quality of the product, very cheap looking and the 2 drawers held together with only 4 small wooden dowells, I'm pretty certain that i'll soon be having problems with these drawers!! I contacted head office only to be told that they can take the 2 un-assembled units back but not the one that I've already put together. I argued that how was I to know until I'd finished putting the thing together that the unit was of poor quality. They have told me to ask my local B&Q store if they would take back the unit. Where do I stand? Any advice much appreciated. Thanks.

Well you are on a sticky wicket really. Given that flat pack furniture by it's very nature is mass produced sh1te, the only "leg" to stand on as it where is if your particular example is a sub standard example of the product. If they are all the same then it's simply what you bought, caveat emptor and all that. Now if you can show that the assembled "on show" sample they have in the shop is an entirely different quality overall or perhaps a catalogue picture looks nothing like the final product, and as such has misled you into purchase, then I'd say you have grounds for a complaint/legal action etc. However its very difficult here to come up with anything other than the traditional maxim, you get what you pay for, QED.

You are not in a very good position if you bought on line you should have the Distance selling Regulations 2000, but if you have gone over the return period you have the Sale of Goods act 1979 as amended which require the goods to be of satisfactory quality and if you look at section 14 this is defined as meeting the standard that a reasonable person would regard as satisfactory taking into account any description of the products and all aspects of the product including the price paid.

My friends returned an assembled unit to B&Q. They were asked to dissemble it, which they did, but were then told they hadn't needed to. However, they got a full refund with no hassle.

TTT, i think they have to be "fit for purpose", no matter what the price is.

Although they are held together by 4 wooden dowels, most people don't bother glueing them as instructed therefore resulting in wonky wardrobes, have you done this?

I couldn't be bothered with all of the hassle so Im returning the 2 units that are unopened to my local store for a refund and Ive put the one assembled on Ebay, hopefully I'll get most of my money back. Thanks to everyone for all of the help. :)
