This cartoon depiction of a father's descent into dementia and his death appears in today's Daily Mail http://tinyurl.com/qe87yll

My parents died at the ages of 58 (mum) and 75 (dad) and were both lucky enough to be spared the horror of losing their mind whilst there body chugged on.

I hope that nobody is upset by this post - my judgement can be a tad dodgy..... thereby lied another story of the brain giving up before the body.

Thanks wolf, your judgement is spot on. It gives a nice balance on here. A truly profound and poignant story, lovingly created by a caring son.
What a wonderful Memorial to his Father, very moving.
That is very moving, I had tears in my eyes looking at that.
I thought it was lovely. I usually find these things frustratingly inaccurate, but the son has related it well- if a little patronising.
thank you for posting that. I had tears reading it.
My eyes are leaking.
pixie - I would never find the son's comments patronising. I can hear a man talking to his father during the more lucid moments, trying to find out where and when it started, how his father felt and, above all, trying his hardest to reassure him.
great post wolf......thanks.

Thanks all. It really is a pity that this illness still exists.

That is really beautiful. I'm holding back tears now. Thank you for sharing that.
that's very sad, isn't it - quite right to post it, wolf.
Oh that's SO moving, but what a lucky gentleman he was to be so loved.
Yes, I read this this morning with moist eyes. I suspect it strikes a chord with many.
I am a big strapping, rough, no-nonsense chap. And i have tears in my eyes.
He could be talking about my Mother, she went the same way...It just breaks your heart... Thank you for posting it wolf. xxx
Wolfie, thank you for posting this.

Strikes quite a deep chord with me.
Well wolf I'm an absolute sobbing wreck now and I've got to go out soon!

I don't know how anyone can think this patronising.
well it's the case for many of us that have to handle this, the play-out between the elements being different for each.....I must say that it's the end that I dread ré my mater....in many ways, and I know this sounds awful, I hope a major stroke nails her. Yes, it may be selfish but I am sure many will understand.
Sadly, I think my Dad (89) is just setting out on this route.

Didn't make me cry. Honest
Lovely post wolf, thank you.

Reminds me of the last 18 months or so of my dear uncle's life. Such an active and bright man, a real tragedy seeing him slip slowly away.
