gaining confidence
5 Answers
I've recently begun drama classes at the ripe old age of 45 partly because it's something I'd really like to do and partly because I'm very lacking in confidence, shy and nervous to a humungus degree. Sensible choice hey?! I'm really enjoying it even though I find standing up in front of people a real test and very nerve-wrecking. I figure there's nothing really stopping me if I can get over this. My question is- has anyone really been able to conquer their nerves and natural personality in some way to achieve something they didn't think they could and how ? thank you.

I wasn't (am not) a natural at either thing. At first I used to come home from my driving lessons and be able to wring the perspiration out of the back of my shirt (I know WAY too much information!!) Nietzsche and Disney are both right when you fool the people you fear, you fool yourself as well!!
I started at Toastmasters because I don't have much confidence when in a group of more than 4 people - specially if I don't know them, ie at a party. Toastmasters is about lots of things - speaking in public, leadership and listening skills. Yes it is nervewracking but I did my ten speeches in front of people, I took part in a speech competition and I really do think it has helped with confidence - and I have to say that it is a great night out! Humourous, interesting and you will always learn something. See if there are any clubs in your area and go to a meeting and see what goes on. As Henry Ford said, if you think you can do something, you are right, and if you think you can't do something, you are right. !! Go on! Good Luck
