Sqad - I meant to ask you this for some time. Anyway can you tell me what did my consultant see in my ears about 2 years ago and she called it Menieres Disease. She practically put the instrument into my ear for seconds but was able to give me a diagnosis right away.

Also somebody told me that it was a disease that can burn out - what is this all about.

I hope I am not jumping the gun but these past 4 weeks I haven't had an attack and am hoping at last has the disease burnt out.

JJ.....there are no signs that can be detected by looking in the ears which are diagnostic of Meniere's Disease, a disease in which the ear drums appear normal on examination.

The diagnosis is made on the history and a batch of audiological tests.

Thanks for that cos I thought when she looked in my ears she found holes etc ie honeycomb variety LOL.

Audiology test that was done that day - a gentleman put earphones on me and asked me to repeat 10 words that came through. Naturally enough I didn't get one right.

Consultant did say I was suitable candidate for cochlear implant to which I said "No way Hosay". JjCon

Do you know if the disease does burn out. That's the last of my questions.

Sorry....just seen this added question.

"Burn't out" is not a medical term but a "lay term" meaning that after suffering the effects of certain diseases, the effects just...."go away."

It sounds as though you have a nerve deafness......probably in both ears which has many causes...............

Yes.......Meniere's Disease IS one of the diseases that can "burn itself out"...................leaving the patient with deafness of course.

I do have nerve deafness - When I was born I had two "boils" in my ears - which burst and destroyed the nerves - sorry the right name won't come to me. However, I cried for about 3 years hence I was not a likeable baby. I do remember at 3 being on a professors table and my mother telling him that I never stopped crying and he told her that she (my mother) would have cried too had she came through the same pain. PS My memory is just of climbing onto the table - the rest came from my mother. Also my mother did take me everywhere but nobody detected my ears. That is a long time ago - today it certainly would have been detected. JjCon

I don't think that your neonatal experience with "boils in your ears" had anything to do with your present deafness.

Cochlear implant in your case?.............give it some thought...........don't kick it into the long grass.

If I was starting my life out then yes to a cochlear implant but since I am ready to croak it I think I will say no, thank you all the same LOL. Thanks for taking time to reply.
