A friend took me to see Rufus Wainwright tonight - as a thank-you treat (and a *** expensive one at £37 per ticket).
I like his stuff - very clever lyrics and an interestingly skewed worldly-wise persona too.
It was terrible - the sound mix rendered him utterly unintelligible (even for songs where I knew the words) - and the humungously expensive grand piano sounded like a $10 honky-tonk. My ears were aching - not from the sound level, but from the dire quality.
We walked out after about 6 songs - and complained in some detail to the venue manager (who I have to say handled it pretty well).
Have you had an expensive disappointment recently?
Not recently that I can think of, Dave....but trekking to Milton Keynes and paying an arm and a leg to see Aspects of Love was a disappointment that we walked out of....x
A few years ago, I phoned the booking office to book tickets to see Elton John play at an outdoor event at a local castle, we were told the tickets were £20 or £40 depending how close you wanted to get. we paid £40 each. when we got there everybody were all just herded into a big field, we would have gone in the same field if we paid £20. Elton arrived by helicopter, looked totally peed of being there and left as soon as he could. The crowd was not impressed, a dreadful performance!!
Venue Manager very apologetic - offered drinks etc - and took all our details. I will wait to see about some sort of refund gesture when they are back at work in the venue offices today.
Most of the ticket money will have gone straight to the promoters though, so I don't hold out a lot of hope.
