His 'one-liners' were funny. However I saw him live in a local nightclub in the seventies and his act was pure filth. I have a very well developed sense of humour but some of his jokes were way beyond the mark.
DTC - I only ever saw Bernard Manning on TV so I can't really comment but I would image they were akin. In Bob's defence he lived locally to me and did an awful lot for charities in the area. Like Jan I remember his partnership with Denis Goodwin and they wrote some clever stuff.
Yes, I've seen both Bob M and Bernard M live MANY years ago. Both were crude, VERY crude. Bernard M was funny though but Bob M. wasn't funny at all. His live act was vile. He was capable of so much better but he went for the lowest form of joke telling. He was embarrassing actually.
The one that could really bang them out, and filthy too, was Ken Dodd. Very clever as he started clean and they slowly got bluer and bluer as time went on, bringing the audience along with him, and how he could rattle them off. You end up laughing and he's already half-way through the next one.
never seen him with an adult audience then, Barsel? Smutty but very funny because of the way he took you along with him.....and, God, could he keep going.
I once saw Ken Dodd at Buxton Opera House, we had an interval around 9.30 and folk were going home as they thought the show was over instead of half way through. A very funny man but I couldn't remember much later as he gags were so quick
