It's all very well Bradford council making a political gesture using public money and no doubt other councils cant wait to follow suit no matter what the cost to the council tax payer. What happens now to all the pay differentials of those employees above the lowest paid who are in a supervisory role for example? Will they be wanting an equivalent pay rise? They have opened a can of worms that's going to cost us tax payers in the end. As usual it's not been thought through.

The living wage should be the minimum wage. If a council pays t then hopefully it'll mean fewer in work also claiming welfare. We pay (public money) either way. And if an agreed differential is the right thing to have (and that needs to be looked at and agreed) then of course it should reflect the greater skill/responsibility/whatever. We don't refuse to do the right thing because we don't wish to pay for it.

I'm not sure whether the 'living wage' means exactly that as the level depends on a worker's circumstances (children, travel to work costs, housing costs, health needs) and does it apply to hourly rate or hours worked /total weekly wage?
