Noise Nuisance Neighbor From Hell
I was just about to sleep when the idiot next door has obviously walked in drunk and are now playing the drums, saxaphone and other loud instruments like they do every weekend and now the insomnia is starting to get to me.
I've phoned the police and the council noise abatement team but they either are too busy and turn up the next morning at 11.am when they're obviously sleeping and I've just managed to close my eyes and on the odd chance that the police do come early they immediately stop the music, run into another room and sit down and then tell the police or noise abatement officer that they were just talking quietly, wasn't playing their instruments and it must be all in my head.
What can I do? I don't have the money to buy expensive surveillance gear and expensive mics and my phone doesn't pick up the noise.
Any pointers will be useful as I won't be going to sleep with that racket on all night.

Thanks for the reply methyl. I'm the only one that hears them as mine and theirs are a semi detached and unfortunately for me we're attached to each other. The neighbors on the other side are elderly and deaf and there's a main road in front of me filled with fast cars that probably drowns it out for the rest of the street. I'd go round there but I'm only one and there are probably 20 of them drunk and big so that wouldn't go down too well in my favour.
I've already told the police to come down on any Saturday night between 11-5 am and they'll catch them but I guess it's their most busy night of the week so are out catching "real" criminals but the thing is I'm being intimidated,my ears and brain through lack of sleep are being physically and mentally abused so does that make me really different or less worthy then "Mr Jones" who had his car smashed up?

I feel for you Broseph - to add to the others good advice already given, do you have a record or video function on your mobile phone? That would save having to buy/ wait for surveillance equipment - you can just record the noise in your bedroom and point the camera at a clock or your laptop screen to show the time & date if this might help to add evidence along with your diary?

Have you raised the issue with your employer? Lack of sleep could seriously impair your work performance, to the point of costing you your job.
A digital recorder with built in condenser mics and storage space for multi-hour mp3 files can be had for under £200 but a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut.
I don't understand why your phone isn't able to record it. If you name the make/model/operating system and the app you were using, I'm sure one of the technical experts can help.
