Why are the Government reluctant to give Local Authorities more power to stop large lorries using restricted roads?

They say the police already have the necessary powers. But this is bonkers - we don't want our already hard-pressed police tied up on this issue when there are far more serious offences requiring their attention.

Seems to me the ever-powerful Transport Lobby has bent the Tory's ear again (and yes, Labour were just as submissive).

Isn't there a Lorry Watch scheme in your area?

They're generally very effective at keeping lorries off roads that they shouldn't be on. The schemes operate widely in counties such as Suffolk and Kent

I'd have thought that law breaking was a police issue. Maybe the problem is police funding in these times of austerity.

but any powers given will have to be enforced by the courts and the police....how will more powers make less work for the police?

Regards that driver in Devon, what a dip stick, if he / she had any sense he / she should have parked his truck up or either asked or walked the road, if he / she had experience, that should have told the person the road was narrow, regards Signage, that IS THE CAUSE, the problem occurs when the driver "gets that close to the Bridge / Road / obstruction then get's stuck as he / she can not turn the 60ft Artic around.

Easy Peasy. Erect signs at each end of every village stating heavy vehicles banned, light vans allowed for deliveries to shops. Then fine heavily for rule breakers.
