Out and about today we came across a pub called The Anne Boal Inn! Awful, isn't it?

They lost their heads when they named that.

I nearly lost my head when I saw it!
As it's in Northern Ireland, they're probably playing safe. Protestants will like the name of the wife of the guy who founded the C of E, whereas Catholics might enjoy the fact that he bumped her off. Further, somebody at least will appreciate the type of pun that far too many poor Irish Comedians seem to rely upon!

Anyway, it's not as boring as the Railway Hotel, which is what it used to be called ;-)

So you know it then Buenchico?
Is it unusual in that area or parr for the course?
To call it crass hardly does it justice. Is there a Jane See More across the road?
No, Elliemay1.

I just know how to use Google ;-)

BTW: Did you know that the landlord has a place in Northern Ireland's political history?

Just after googling it myself Buenchico and see that the original owner was called Anne Boal.
I wouldn't have believed that, EM1, unless I'd just looked up 'Boal' as a surname in the Oxford Names Companion. It does indeed exist, as a Northern Ireland variation on 'Bowler' which, in turn, either means a maker of bowls or (perhaps appropriately here) a heavy drinker.

As an aside, this is possibly of interest:

Reminds me of a cafe in Cavan called The Hard Boiled Egg!! What a name!
Well I'm going to make No20 my local, Chris, if it lives up to its name.

Was a pub in Derbyshire called The Soldier Dick (note only one 's')
Blimey Chris, those 'Drunken Ducks' get about theres one not far from me.
There used to be a 'Dirty Duck' to sometime ago.
There's a pub up the road from me which has an interesting way of advertising:

;-)
Ah reverse psychology me thinks, Chris.
That be a good pub in Norfolk.
Norfolk?

I'm on the right side of passport control on the county border, Svejk, in Suffolk!
'The Hangmans Knot... Inn' always tickled me.
