Talktalk - Connecting Smart Tv

I bought a Samsung Smart Tv a few weeks ago and initially had no problems with it. On Friday my router died - it was an old 3Com model, built like a tank with four ports for Cat cables at the back - none of which I was using at the time. I had an old Talktalk router that I got a few years back when we were having problems with the old router, that I had never actually used. I hooked that up and everything was hunky dory; Smart TV, tablet and two laptops all connected just fine with it.

Meanwhile I had already contacted TalkTalk before I'd realised it was the old router causing connection problems with both WiFi and phone lines. All was resolved when I put the 'new' router in so I rang to tell them I'd solved the problem. They offered me a new router and Youview box and a price reduction for having been a loyal customer. I didn't really want the Youview box, but the router - yes please. They are due to arrive tomorrow

However, this morning I find I can't get the router to connect the Smart TV to the internet. I hadn't changed anything in our setup, but although the WiFi works for tablet and laptops and the TV can get through to the router via WiFi (the router is in the hall, about 2.5 - 3 metres away from the TV), it won't connect from the router to the internet. I've tried resetting the router. I called Talktalk but they didn't seem to be able to help apart from saying the router is old and probably not compatible with the Smart TV - but it worked fine over the weekend.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to try and get things working again please? Hopefully tomorrow the new router will sort things out - but a temporary fix would be great.

have you tried all the wi-fi options to connect on your tv

There's only one network available - our router of course. I've also tried the WPS button with no success.

on my sony you have to go to settings to connect to wi-fi if you have disconeced your router re enter the wi-if pass number

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place - Talktalk say it's my TV, Samsung say it's my router. I've reset the router and also reset the TV to no avail. I've seen from various forums that this is a common problem, or has been in the past, there are a few solutions but none more up to date than last summer. Hopefully problems will be resolved tomorrow when I have the new router.

if you have reset the tv that makes no difference, see my last text you have to add on the smart tv the router ip address in settings WI-FI it cant connect if its not got a correct ip address

How would I resolve the conflicting IP addresses? I did at one point try putting all the settings in by hand, but don't know what the IP address should be...

the ip address is the number under your router or on the card that came with it's a 10 number poss with letters mixed in,(wireless password)

TV is a Samsung UE43J5500.

Re IP address in simple terms; is the IP address for the router permanent? When I log on with various devices do they need this? I thought that it changes every time you log on?

Going into my network settings on the TV, the number on the router corresponds to 'gateway' on the router. It says it's a DNS setting that's the problem but I've looked up TalkTalk's DNS number, and it's correct on the TV network settings.

So - presumably my router has an IP address, as do my 2 laptops, tablet and TV. How fixed are they? I've had trouble connecting my partner's laptop and have to reset the router to get it to connect, but my own laptop and tablet have connected just fine. All connections are via wifi - would having the TV 'hard wired' via LAN solve anything? I think I would need a powerline adapter for that but don't want to get one if I don't need it.

Taichi does your tv and you have a normal areial socket if so I would so you can bypass router. If tv works ok then then router is at fault if not then problem with tv or wait for your new router to arrive

My printer, phone, pc, hi fi system, sky wireless connection and laptop all have different ip addresses as does any device that is connected to the net.

Tony, TV signal is fine - I can watch TV, just can't connect to the internet for all the smart features (no IPlayer/youtube etc).

I'll just have to wait for the new router methinks. It's just so frustrating as everything was working fine before.

Hmmm this is a good one taichai. I have had a look on line and spoken to a pal, maybe if you don't sort the problem with the new, new router, it may be worth trying a wifi extender in the tv Ethernet port. I know it sounds daft but apparently Samsung although being fine tv sets have a problem that is pretty universal with wireless ip recognition. The extender will work by drawing power from the usb port on the tv. My pal also suggest (although the tv is new) checking if there are software updates available via you tv remote. Menu....Support.....Software Update.

sorry but everything thats connecting to your wi-fi from your router whether its a mobe/ laptop/ tablet/ they all use the same wi-fi address to connect to it which ill say again is the 10 digit number under your router

and yes it is permanent except if you have disconnected the whole thing then you may have to insert the wi-fi address again,and its nothing to do with a DNS address
