No Money For Funerals.
21 Answers
Something I read this evening prompted me to ponder over this..
I've been reading quite a few times recently where people have used sites like GoFundMe or Justgiving to collect money to pay for someones funeral.
Mostly through accidents, people are often "taken" far too soon and made no provision for such an event..leaving next of kin to find the cost of a funeral which by all accounts is pretty hefty these days.
Can only get worse with prices going through the roof. My parents both had Death Insurance Policies that just about covered the cost. In those days the Insurance man would come to the door to collect the premium.
People don't seen to take out these policies these days, to my knowledge that is. I am guessing it may have declined with the loss of doorstep collections.

It was very difficult for a woman to get a loan in her own name, too. It was not so easy to get the funeral paid for by social security if there were no other funds available.
If the deceased has left no assets and the family refuses to pay, the local council will organise the funeral and pay for it.

You will not get the full amount of the funeral. Some councils charge much more for funerals than others but those on benefits will only qualify for a certain amount toward the cost. That's why it is a good idea to notify people of deaths on Facebook rather than incur the cost of printing it in the local papers, and also doing one's own catering will help keep the cost down.
Forget where I saw it, but I was reading about "Cremation Only" the other day. No funeral, just the body is collected from home or the mortuary etc. and is taken straight to the crematorium. This is done by funeral directors, but there is no service. It's something I'm thinking of doing on a pre paid plan.
'Direct to Crematorium' funerals are becoming increasingly popular. They cost around £900 - £1200 depending on where you live.
It is extremely basic with the undertaker collecting the body, putting it in the cheapest possible coffin (possibly cardboard) and taking it to the crematorium, usually in the undertakers' van, not the hearse. The body can't be viewed, there is no service.
David Bowie opted for this. Of course the family can have a service, a ceremony, a memorial or a jolly old knees up at a convenient time wherever they want it.

peachybabe I do like that idea.
I have written instructions for my family to dispose of my body as cheap and simple as possible.
I hate the idea of a funeral director making money from the bereaved when they are at their most vulnerable.
No too to newspaper adds. Anyone who needs to know of my passing will know via word of mouth. Florists won't make much out of me either if the family abide by my wishes. I have stated 1 single stem if they must buy me flowers...I'll have them now when I can see them.
I have looked at pre-payment plans but so far haven't found one to just cover the necessities you mention. Do let me know if you manage to sort something.
My niece hates me talking like this but its true...it doesn't bother me talking bout it, tho I'm not ready to pop off anywhere just yet.

I have a very small family, most of who will probably pre decease me. I'm single with no kids, and very down to earth. I also can't abide being ripped off, and if someone tried to do it when I've turned my toes up, I'll come back and haunt them!! If I knew I was about to die, I'd take myself off to the nearest landfill!
It is 100% legal to just have the body taken direct to the back door of the crematorium and put direct into the furnace. No service no viewing, no coffin is needed just a shroud or a body bag is fine ( body bags £11 on eBay) This is much cheaper than a 'direct to cremation' service as suggested by peachybabe as no funeral director is needed you just arrange for someone to take the body to the crem and hand it over. A van or estate car will do or a hand cart if you live near enough.
The only cost is the death certificate and the clearance for cremation certificate then the cremation fee. Total cost should be well under £400.
As long as the deceased was on state pension or benefits you must be granted a funeral payment from the social fund as long as someone applies for it, it is not automatic, This will have to be paid back from the estate but if there is no money in the estate then they can't get it back. ALL funeral directors MUST BY LAW provide a basic funeral for the cost of the funeral grant they HATE you knowing this and will try every trick in the book to try to get more cash out of the family. It is a good idea to get a quote from several funeral directors and then keep going back and asking them it beat the last quote, they don't like it but they hate the idea of another company getting the cash even more. A friend of ours got her Dad's funeral down from £3000 to £1200 by going back and forth between 3 funeral directors asking them to beat the last quote.
So the body direct to the furnace in a van should cost under £400, a funeral grant is £1200 to £2000 so that leaves plenty of cash for a *** up at the local pub in memory of the deceased! That's the way I'm going.
I intend to buy a bulk pack of body bags on eBay from the USA keep one and sell the rest , that should raise enough to pay for the furnace fee and the entire grant can be spent on a p**ss up.

On a separate note Eddie, I have seen you state before about having a blowout on the back of the Funeral payment.
It is my understanding and indeed experience that the grant is paid direct to the Funeral Director if not already paid and into the bank account of the person named on the produced receipted bill(if they qualify) if the bill has been settled.
Not sure how this equates with the grant paying for a wake/party, nice though that sounds.

I understand people's thoughts about cremation without ceremony - my own dad keeps telling me to chuck him over the fence when he's gone - but I think funerals are important for those left behind in order to say goodbye, come together and celebrate the life of the deceased.
Someone close to me has died recently, and his funeral is still a couple of weeks away. I feel as we're in limbo waiting for the time to finally say goodbye.
A celebrationless disposal wouldn't feel right.
