Just Had Dental Implants Fitted ..... Now Waiting For The Anaesthetic To Wear Off .....

Most of you probably won't know - had an accident on my bicycle aaaaaaages ago and knocked most of my front teeth out, so I've got a combination of a denture, a crown and a bridge.
Anyway, I decided a while ago, to take the plunge and have implants fitted, so I can do away with the denture. Just had 2 implants inserted into my jawbone and go back next week to have the stitches removed.
The dentist reckons it'll be approx 6 months before the final crowns are placed onto the implants :)
On a lighter note, for the time being I am now part pig and part cow .......... yea you read that right.
They use artificial bone (which comes from a cow) to help the jaw bone heal and helps the implants graft to the jawbone.
They also use a membrane to cover the artificial bone, which comes from a pig.
Apparently the membrane dissolves within 2 weeks and the cow bone bits take approx 2 years to be fully expelled out of your system.
In the meantime, I just hope I don't start mooing or oinking lol :P

they give the implants a while to bed down so they can see everything's settled right before they put the final crowns on. But when they dig uyou up in 500 years, archaeologists ought to be able to date you very precisely from your dental records.

I'm feeling fine thanks ...... ask me in another hour or so though, when the anaesthetic has worn off and I might answer differently lol :P

I've had lots of implants, hc4361. The alternatives are dentures you take out every night, and living on Milupa for the rest of my life. Expensive, but I think well worth it.

I've got bridges that can't be removed. 15 years and no problems yet, totally natural looking

I've got a bridge and a crown, but unfortunately implants were the only real option to replace my 2-tooth denture :(

I was considering this until the dentist very kindly showed me a video of the whole procedure. I nearly threw up on the spot!! Talk about grim. You're braver than me lol

Anaesthetic starting to wear off now - I can feel my lip .... not long before the pain kicks in .... Ibuprofen at the ready :)

there is no reason why you should not take the loading dose of ibuprofen and paracetamol now

Today's appt cost me exactly £3000.
Altogether it's going to cost me approx £7500, but I'm having my crown and bridge replaced as well, 'cos I've had them quite a while and the gums have receded slightly, so you can see the root of the tooth underneath .... plus I'm having a mouth guard made, to protect my implants at night time.

To be honest, it wasn't anywhere as bad as I thought it was going to be.
The anaesthetic wore off ages ago and I've only had 2 Ibuprofen. There's not too much pain, it's more discomfort than anything else.
I was told that the swelling peaks between 24 and 48 hours after the op .... so we'll see what I'm like in the next day or 2 :)

it shouldn't hurt while it's being done, they do use anaesthesia, but it may throb for a couple of days, your head's had a bit of a battering. Usually nothing nurofen's can't cope with.

Sounds like a fair price. The main thing is to be happy with the results.

I'm sorry to hear about your bike accident and what you've been through, and still not finished yet.
Hopefully not long now until all done and I wish you all the very best for a speedy conclusion and recovery :-)

I should have made things a bit clearer about the bike accident - it was approx 36 years ago.
I only recently decided to go for implants, when my 2 tooth denture broke and I was left with a gap until the denture was repaired and then replaced. I was mortified, as I'm very conscious about my teeth and their appearance .... I didn't want to go through that again so hey ho .... here I am, on the start of my journey for implants. Dentist reckons it'll be approx 6 months from start to finish :)
