I know it will sound like making excuses, but there were just 4 council seats contested, and Labour was not expected to make any gains.

The lost a seat, which obviously wasn't good, but the ward has a large jewish population, and the sneaky Tories fielded a Rabbi.

The Conservatives got a 297 majority, while the independent candidate took 354 votes. Turnout was 24%.

Yes the Good Burghers of Salford really get down and dirty when they engage with local politics. I suppose the 24%who bothered to vote don’t get out too much and just fancied somebody to talk to at the polling station. A bit more fuel for CALC (my Campaign for the Abolition of Local Councils).
