Have You Walked Any Of These Steep Streets?

I have never walked any of those mentioned, but I have walked the very steep street down to the beach in Clovelly in Devon, yet this steep hill was not mentioned.

Gold Hill yes.
And I've run up Wyche Road in a race.
There's a street in Harlech which I'm sure is the equal of any of those.

Can't say I've ever walked those , but two that stick in my mind are - Constitution Hill in Settle, which is mercifully short but daunting after a night in the pub as you wend your way back to your cottage.

The other is the main street in Bishop's Castle, only a few months earlier I had suffered multiple fractures, so wasn't best pleased at our location for the week.

Some years ago I stayed for a week in the "Red Lion" pub which is on the harbourside at Clovelly. Guests had to park their cars at the top and although on arrival you were met by Land Rover and taken down the back road with your luggage, after that you had to walk up and down (passing the "New Inn" in your photo). If we'd been for a night out on occasions the New Inn would still be open and we'd pop in for a nightcap before having our real nightcap in the bar of the Red Lion. They often did "afters" there. We were surprised one evening to find the bar full of people at about midnight (there were strict licencing hours then) with a large "spoof" competition going on. I expressed my surprise to the guv'nor (I think his name was Roger) and asked what would happen if the local Plod made a surprise visit. "Not much chance of that. PC Plod is the bloke by the bar with the blue braces who has just got through to the next round of spoof!" With that Mrs Roger appeared from the kitchen with a large plate of sandwiches and sausage rolls. Happy Days !!!

None of those in the Yorkshire article are a patch on Robin Hood’s Bay or some of the lanes in Whitby.

There is, or used to be, a fiendishly steep road on the east coast of Barbados, leading to Bathsheba, which was like a cliff-face. It was terrifying driving down it, and almost impossible driving back up. My little old mini barely made it in first gear - someone overtook me walking, and advised me to go back down and try again in reverse.

Thanks Z-M at 15whatever. I know most of those (Sutton Bank is fairly regular)- and woof pre-empted me with Robin Hood's Bay. A notable absentee is Main Street, Haworth - it is quite a climb and for some reason it gets harder as I get older......as do the steps up to Whitby Abbey! Anyone who hasn't visited at least one bit of Yorkshire, please give yourself a treat. You'll be welcome. :)
P.S. Avoid main tourist times.

PPS Just remembered that the road from Keld up to Tan House Inn used to be more or less vertical in places, to begin with. I think they put an improvement in a few years ago. Good fun when I used to drive the kids up - they screamed!
