It seems that my definition of it differs to you folks, so I wanna know how you guys define a guilty pleasure compare to how I define it.

My definition involves these different situations/interests:

1) Something you felt uneasy/negative about at first, but then ended up liking for some reason.
2) Something that would lead to physical (as well as verbal/mental) assaults no matther how much you try to defend/ignore
3) An interest that you know is flawed/has its faults, yet you like it because you can't help such a feeling. For example, a song with full racial/sexist lyrics. You may be aware that the song is heavily flawed for its sexual/racial lyrics, and end up thinking “Damn, they are right about this criticism", but you can't stop listening to it! (I could also use Nicki Minaj's Anaconda video as an example for males, because such a "seemingly" objeciifying video may still get males sexually aroused to the point of wanting more of it.
4) Liking something that is “out of character/different in personality and approach" compare to yourself. Like this metal guy who admits to liking some pop acts!

okay here’s the thing...you tell us what answer you want...we will give that answer...job done!
I've just had lunch otherwise I would have had a Spam sandwich ;-)
I don’t think its actual spam Eccles, more like a very worried young person.

Same old, over and over again.
My definition of a guilty pleasure is something you know is bad for you but you decide to eat / do anyway. Like I'm a type one diabetic, so ideally unless I want to take masses of insulin to counteract the carb intake, which leads to weight gain and a whole spiralling raft of nonsense, I do well to avoid stuffing my face with chocolate cake every day. However occasionally I have a splurge and that could be described as a 'guilty pleasure' because it's bad for me, I know it's bad for me, but I do it anyway.
That however can't really be applied to anything else in my life because it's really important that you are just you and own anything and everything about yourself otherwise you'll be very worried and unhappy, so music, dress sense, politics, likes etc are unaffected by this.
Does that help you?

I just had a look at Minaj's You Tube Anaconda video.
She's not much of a singer, is she?
As I advised on your other thread, I don't have 'guilty pleasures' - I'm a grown up, I listen to what I want, and I don't have to justify my taste to anyone.
... but did it make you want more of it, sandy
FF, I could force myself to watch similar videos of her if the sound was turned off.
^^ LOL!

I only mentioned the Anaconda video as an example of an oversexualized and "seemingly" objectifying video towards women, that is trying to sexually appeal to males. So when I say that males wnated more of it, I mean that they are willing to repeat the video or watch other oversexualized videos of women because he feels sexually attracted even if he does think that is seems objectifying for women.

Kvalidir - What do you mean when you say "music, dress sense, politics, likes etc are unaffected by this. "?

andy-hughes - So long you are not getting assaulted for it, I get your position.

woofgang (and everyone else) - This is about YOUR definition about guilty pleasures (because I already said a top that mines apperntly seems different too most folks). So I would for you to tell me how you define a guilty pleasure.
A guilty pleasure for me is something that I'd be slightly embarrassed about and not let on. Mostly however I don't care what other folk think about me when it comes to musical taste or TV shows etc... but years ago I was hooked on Desperate Housewives.... shhh don't let on it was a show I enjoyed and was proper gripped.
ok, I define it as a concept which some people use to describe things they enjoy but for some reason feel that they shouldn’t.
I mean that the way I dress, my political views, music, art, food likes etc- in fact anything really is completely unaffected by anyone else. That is I don't care what they think of it. To be happy in life you absolutely MUST be yourself, there is no such thing as a guilty pleasure on music or art or anything else like that. If you are getting beaten up because you like Justin Beiber, then you need a new circle of acquaintances. You won't say how old you are, but if you are an adult then you need to move house or get a different job and if you're still at school you need to talk to someone in authority who can do something about this for you, you do not need to change or be made to feel 'guilty' because you like something, it's really unhealthy.

Kvalildir, Im not sure that those interests are unaffected. I mean #4 shows that those things can count if it's out of character for you. The video showed a metal critic listing 10 music artists that are "out of convention" for someone like him to like (he even explained in the video), and I know he wouldn't care what anyone else thinks of he made this video public.
Question Author
Kvalidir, Did you see the video?
I am not sure how things can actually be “out of character” That might be someone else’s judgement when a person behaves in way they aren’t expected to, but surely if its something that you do or enjoy, even rarely, then in must be in your character?
