Is Your Manager Able To Force You To Come In If You Are Sick And Can't Find Anyone To Cover You?
15 Answers
So recently a lot of people have been calling in "sick" and now my manager is saying how if anyone who calls in sick anymore times, will get their "final warning". And anytime after that is a termination... So now, the next time, WHOEVER is sick will need a doctor's note or else they will get a write up. And you know, you get sick here and there and it's not major enough to sit in the waiting room for hours for a doctor's note. But now I can't even call a day off because I'm sick with the stomach flu and usually that goes away after you vomit. The only thing is that you don't know when so it's safer to stay at home. And I can't even do that anymore because of other people... Plus, she's actually making me come in because no one is available to cover me :/ And now anything that used to be a first warning, is now a FINAL WARNING. I haven't done anything but now I have to deal with this too because of other people, but she's not lenient on these things.

However you need to remember that if you've worked for an employer for under two years they can fire you for any reason they like (or simply for no reason at all) unless the reason is one which contravenes the laws relating to discrimination. (e.g. they can't fire you solely because they've found out that you're gay or a Muslim).

Sickness is a big problem for employers, I work as a domiciliary carer, sickness is a huge problem, mostly from people just cant be bothered to work or just hungover. Our company has just introduced new rulings to combat that, basically if they dont believe you, you will be sacked, with or without a sick not if you have been with the company for less than years. And rightly so, Im fed up losing my days off to cover someone that would just rather stay at home!

BC thay the truth
if you have worked there for less than two years
then they can do what they like
( xc a few things - union activity and whistle blowing which are protected from day 1 - this doesnt apply)
the high sickness rate is strongly tied to your manager and her activities - but that isnt important to you ....
you may be looking at a change of job....
