because communication theories help with communication anywhere!! Everything involving two or more entities revolves around communication. Think of any bit of healthcare and it will always require two or more people to understand each other!!

Communication is not always linguistic. Some patients are deaf, some are blind, others handicapped by lack of intelligence,or ignorance of the mores and values of clinical staff.

Restricted and extended codes of speech are baffling when cultures clash. Also proxemics and touch can be taboo. Doctors, nurses etc. have a licence to touch, denied to the majority of people; therapeutically this is invaluable, especially in a cold 'non-touch' society such as Britain. Think along these lines, you will get the idea.
