What A Waste!

After picking my repeated medication from doctors, I noticed an extra lot of ant viral tablets that Id already taken two weeks ago. So I rand surgery to see if I was suppised ti take more. Was told it was a mistake on theit part and told me to throw them away. I told receptionist they were still intact unopened. She said they were not allowed to be returned even unopened. How daft! What a waste of money. When you hear the NHS is losing money and struggling etc, you have to think No Wonder!

They are literally not allowed to take them back, I know it seems awful.

There are some charities that accept unopened meds, I'll see if I can find one.

Struggling to find one just now, maybe they too ran into problems with legislation.

I know it is, I've been through this when my Husband died and it was hard work - I realise they have to be very careful though.

Take them to the pharmacy and hand them in.

Its not daft. It would be quite easy to tamper with meds, also if you had been into some of the houses that i have been in, you would understand not wanting to pass on ANYTHING from that house. You will say that you are a clean person and I am sure you are but pharmacies cannot know where the meds have been or who has handled/had access to them so there has to be a rule to keep everyone safe.

The rules must have changed because I remember my GP giving me boxes of medication which she had at the surgery .

There was no pharmacy attached to the surgery

Mind you you we are talking probably 20 or so years ago

While we're on the subject of medication

Her indoors never checks medication dispensed before she starts using it

Whereas I always check to make its correct Inc use by dates and strength

Am I been over cautious do you think ?

nope. Couple of times I have been given the wrong thing and I have about one prescription every three years or so. Different towns, different pharmacies.

bazile it might have been a sample given by a rep. I think the rules have changed there too but around 30 years ago my brother in law was a drug firm rep and he used to have samples to hand out.

no, Bazile, always check. Doctors and chemists alike have been known to err.

I was told that any unused and unwanted medication was to be taken to the nearest pharmacy where it could be safely disposed

You should always check medication. I was released from hospital a few months ago with a whole bag of someone else's medication and none of my own. Even had her name on the front of the bag. My DIL rang the hospital and a nurse called in later with the correct meds.
