How much damage can be done to your car if you hit one?

I’ve seen one plastered to the grille of a Citroen C3. I really don’t want to have one stuck to my little lady. But, after this evenings drive home first case slamming on the brakes right after a bend because one ran out and the second the car in front of me doing an emergency stop to avoid hitting one, I think I’d take my chances and hit it.

I got such a fright the first time as all my stuff in my handbag came flying out and all over the footwell, don’t get me started on the bang (I suspect that was the hardback book landing on my hypo box) and me veering off into a stopping space.

I’m ok, my cars ok that bird is not ok...it’s thicker than cement.

The one I hit broke the grill on the front of the focus I had at the time.

If you hit one at speed it's like hitting a brick. They can do a lot of damage.

Round here there are thousands of the stupid suicidal little idiots. Altho they are slightly less stupid than partridges who will try and outrun you.

Better try and avoid them then.

I was only doing 30/5. It’s the same here Barmaid, but they are for sure suicidal. It was all black but it was definitely a pheasant. Think I’ve seen a partridge once, but it wasn’t on the road thankfully.

Altho they are slightly less stupid than partridges who will try and outrun you.

But on a par with those stupid wood pigeons imo.

I had a headlight and its mounts wiped out and a considerable amount of pheasant puree to clean up.

I would and have hit them and other wildlife e.g. Rabbits that are wandering in the road, you can cause another accident by heavy breaking, or swerving to avoid them.

Haha Tony! I was in Edinburgh and I kid you not I saw 2 pigeons crossing the road on a crossing with a green man! I can’t speak for the one that fell down my chimney.

Pheasant purée! I love it. Sorry about your head lamps though Crapatcryptics.

At the time Tony it wasn’t on my side of the road, it had the cheek to turn and go back. I can’t hit a bunny, well not intentionally anyways. I was prevented from hitting a dear though once, which I am really grateful for.

I hit one at speed, it went through the grill and pushed the radiator into the fan, knackered the engine, car was a right off!!

Good grief Ratter, that sounds horrendous! Glad you are ok though. Scary to think though how one largish bird can cause so much damage.

One of my routes to a factory would take me through a managed pheasant shoot i.e. Pheasants bred to be shot and often birds had been hit by vehicles. On the other hand if my father came across one on an early morning fishing trip, and hadn't been too badly damaged, would end up plucked and cooked.

Yes Queenie, one of our company cars was written off after hitting a deer. Unfortunately driver had too wait for police firearms unit to arrive to finally dispatch the deer.

I've had a pigeon smash a headlamp, a fox damage a cooling fan, and a magpie split a number plate.

But the weirdest one was a mouse crouching in the middle of the road on a wet night was about to be scooped up by an owl, but being a wise old bird it saw me coming and soared up again, leaving the mouse to pass under the car and presumably escape.

All I’ve seen lately is two badgers, it broke my heart. I think they may have been mates.

Deers are bad round here. My dad hit one on the A1 when he was on probation, he was so shook up he had to come home before he could go back to the office. He managed to keep the job but it was a horrid shock for him.

Hit a Pheasant few years back, was only after a couple of weeks had passed, when I was topping up the screen wash, that I noticed I still had a big chunk of (cooked) Pheasant stuck between the radiator and the bodywork.
