To make a desk top and some shelves to make a small dressing room into an office. Don't have too much money so the wood needs to be a finished product that doesn't need any treatment such as painting. What is the best and cheapest option for this project please ?
Possibly buy a door. just a cheap flush internal door that you could varnish if not already finished with white paint. That would serve as the desktop. Shelves would need perhaps white finished boards with a few bits of 2 by 1 planed timber.
MDF would need some sort of painted or varnished finish. That's not such a big deal; water-based internal varnish would only take a day for a couple of coats. Free offcuts could be a good idea, but a desktop would need a fairly big sheet. It's worth trying all the same; I've given away things like that.
Not sure of your abilities working with sheets of wood, but it is very easy to forget about the cost of the other materials needed when starting with a bare sheet of MDF or ply. Tools, frame, adhesive, stain, edging, fixings, screws etc.
Have used these on a few ocassions when creating a work or office surface .. cheap and cheerful..
