Initially, you do back slaps then abdominal thrusts. You make one hand into a fist and point the knuckle of the thumb towards the body whilst holding the fist with the other hand. You pull inwards and slightly upwards. You alternate 5 of those with back slaps.
With a child you use one hand and with an infant you use two fingers. You can also do it on an unconcious person but nowadays they recommend that you go straight into CPR as the action of that can dislodge the obstruction.
what is staggering is how many folk have no idea of how to do this, SJ......someone I knew, the restaurant manager of the Churchill in London, died in NY on a chunk of steak and nobody knew how to give the manoeuvre.
DT - I`ve come close to choking a couple of times in my life. Both times it was with steak. I rarely eat red meat but when I eat steak now, I make sure I cut off the smallest pieces. The trouble with choking in public is that you can't speak so can only gesture as to what the problem is.
