I work in retail and it is forever evolving we now are going to be till trained on top of umpteen jobs we do now. I am a manual worker I love graft, I just can't see me sitting on a till. Anyone know where I stand? I know I have an option to go but my age is against me in finding a job. Cheers for any replies
The more tasks you can cover the better you will understand the business, the more valuable you will be to your employer and more likely to keep your job if cuts are ever necessary. In my opinion being busier makes the day go faster.
The more strings to your bow or the more skills that you have the more likely you are to be a, retained and b, more able to find another job should you need to. No doubt you will be paid to learn too.... I had to pay for my own course on computer skills in my own free time years ago when it was deemed to a vital part of my work...of course the younger people were already there!! Go for it and good luck
Where I work (Morrison’s) we have to be multi functional.
We have our core skills but work mainly in our preferred area.
Although I work in the customer cafe and I don’t have to know or learn shop floor procedures (unless I want overtime in that area) I do have to know all the procedures for the cafe. I could be at the customer till one minute and cooking and platting up the food the next then clearing tables and washing up the next.
Even in the cafe we have our preferred section to work on and can usually get to do that most of the day but we do bob from one thing to the next.
Somewhere like Lidle you have to do everything but they are much smaller.
How big is your outlet and is it part of a national chain?
If it’s like some of the companies that I know through relatives, there could be something in your contract that says management can change/add roles for operational reasons. It might be worth checking.
Just go through with the training. You will probably never be asked to use it. All training is worth having in some way even if you can't see it at the moment.
Training is fine. If you get on with your boss, and if you are put on a till and really don't like it, ask if you could be put on other duties. They can say, "No", but worth a try after you've been seen to give it a go.
